I just shot Chris this note and decided to put it in as a comment as well:
Chris,
Can't believe I found myself watching your entire video about "upgrading" to XP from Vista. But I did find it interesting even if it was a bit longer than it needed to make the points you were making....
I haven't had the trouble you have had because I bought a Vista machine with it preloaded so the driver experience has been fine and I wont get going about my thoughts on HP and scanning as that's not Microsoft's fault.
My issues have been with the inconsistent treatment of file permissions. I have many computers and my Vista laptop is just one and I have a network attached hard drive for common storage. I've run into a problem within the Vista laptop where a file I have created within one account is not accessible within that account indicating I don't have permission to access it. I find this disturbing. My nightmare is that I end up not being able to access files of mine due to this kind of issue. Are you aware of any good resources or articles that address this?
Also, you mention in your video the cost of switching out your Intel based computer to the Apple hardware as being an impediment to your switching to Mac. Don't you think Apple could get an immediate market share boost of 10% if they released a downloadable version of Leopard that I could install on my non-mac Intel machines for $100? I know I would likely make the switch immediately. The single button mouse on the Mac laptops kept me from buying a mac laptop this last time. A sad impediment in my mind. I know Jobs is obsessed with managing the user experience and all and an "open" version of the Mac OS would mean Apple would have to be mindful of all h/w and s/w interactions possible as opposed to the specific chipsets they currently write to but they would gain an incredible amount of momentum if they could steal 10% and that momentum could translate into an acceleration into the lead. If Apple ever gets the lead then MSFT with it's inherent animosity from the user community would have a long road to regain it and would likely be a better OS and company for the experience.
