Some members of his virtual audience encouraged him to do it, others tried to talk him out of it, "

This is the kind of story that makes you question. Question the common sense and humanity for your fellow man. Question the responsibility of this rather new technology called the Internet. Whatever the answers you come up with, this is a sad sad story all the way around. A young man who suffered with bouts of depression who was a college student and had his whole life ahead of him kills himself in front of a viewing au dance. Some laughed, some joked, some thought it was a joke. Some tried to talk him out of it and some edged him on. But NO ONE had the thought to call for help. No one said to themselves, just in case this guy is going to really do this, let me call the cops.
Would that have been too much to ask? Is that considered butting in? Minding someone else's business? Is it just easier to say I'll just sit here and watch to see what happens. Watch as this kid kills himself. LIVE!

Is this a new form of Reality TV? I sure hope not. I for one think it is a shame that No one, not one person took the time to pick up a phone to try and get help for this young man.

What happened in this situation is a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

I would like to add a note, on behalf of Chris and the administration here at Geeks. To anyone reading this thread and considering commenting... please do NOT turn it into something ugly. I love how the discussion is going right now. The first time I see someone taking this thread places it shouldn't go... I will remove it and ban the person in question faster than you can blink. I dont mean to sound so "harsh", but I well know exactly where some trolls may try to take this. Let this be the one and only warning for it NOT to go there.

Carry on with the discussion. :)

It's a horrible tragedy, what happened to this young fella. His family must be anguished.

When people decide to expose themselves to the public, they should firstly be DAMN sure they can deal with ridicule and bad advice.

Every sicko and psycho that has access to a computer is lurking sites like justin.tv looking for people they can victimize. For these types of monsters, an unstable young man like this was a perfect opportunity.

Anyone that starts to broadcast themselves in real time on the internet on sites like justin.tv with hopes of getting 'life advice' is kidding themselves. Truly normal people (that could give good advice) leave those chatrooms as quickly as they enter... leaving only the degenerates. Which stands to reason, as the way people talk and the things they say, for the most part, is disgusting in those venues.

I think this type of problem will get worse before it gets better - that's the truly sad thing.

It's definitely a sad state of affairs when the answer to a cry for help is to be skeptical and ridicule the person, or not get involved or get help.

In an interview the Broward County Cororner said that if a call for help was placed right away that he more than likely would have been saved.

They teach in suicide prevention to always take someone threatening to do self harm seriously. I'd rather call for help even if it proves to be a false alarm than stand idly by and do nothing.

I remember bout a year ago someone committed suicide on Paltalk. Except they hung themselves ,either way its sad. In this instance he may have been saved if someone called it in, maybe.
