As far as I know, Obama recently decided that in order to save $48 billion over the course of a decade, the system of student loans needs to be changed. In doing so, the private lenders (banks) will no longer give out the loans as a result of all the profits being made by the banks alone while taxpayers and the government pay the price. Instead the government will directly give out the loans. This is how I have interpreted what I've researched about the subject.
More importantly, how did I come to even hear about this change in the system? My best friend Amy attends Indiana State University. She is a great student who holds a 3.8 G.P.A. She wants to be a dietitian and is completely focused on that goal. However, this summer she discovered that her student loans were denied. How is this? When she told me about the denial of her loans, I was infuriated. I have a scholarship for myself and don't have to worry about loans, but I am astounded that my friend might not be able to go to college despite all of her ambition and hard work because of the change in the system. She told me that her Dad explained to her how her loans were denied because of Obama's new plan. Thus, this is why I decided to research the matter. I just don't understand why my friend, who is so deserving to go to college, is being denied the right.
poor Amy.
