I'm sickened.

On January 16th (5 days before the inauguration) Microsoft and the Presidential Inauguration Committee announced that they will be using Microsoft Silverlight technology to stream the inauguration.

Why not use Adobe Flash technology which has upwards of 95% market penetration? Even after the Olympics were streamed using Silverlight, it's penetration was only 30%.

Congress just created channels for the House and Senate on YouTube, which uses Flash technology, so why not make it truly easy for those who want to watch the inauguration on the web by using the same technology?

The most likely answer? Money.

@Zune80 - I didn't bash the Silverlight technology itself, only the decision to go with a new technology that is not as widely deployed. It goes completely their "open" and "accessible" statement about streaming the inauguration.

Let me remind you that even though Microsoft "lost" in court, they really continue to go against the rulings in that case.

Sure, I think Microsoft has some great technologies, but forcing a user (or blatently leading the flock towards a brand-new MS technology) during huge events such as the Olympics or a inauguration is just wrong. If they had streamed in both Flash and Silverlight from the official inauguration website I wouldn't have a problem.

I won't even get into the court cases argument, aside to say that I think the legal community wasted a lot of time and money, because Microsoft will do what they want to and pay the fines later.

You joined this site 15 hours ago...just to make an entry that bashes Microsoft Silverlight? It sickens you? That's rather extreme. Let me remind you that during the Clinton era...the US Justice Department put a bulls eye on everything Microsoft did, and dragged them into court over the most ridiculous things. Oh poor Netscape can't make a browser that people like more than Internet Explorer so we must break up Microsoft into multiple divisions and companies. The Justice Department said it was unfair for Microsoft to hold a monopoly in the browser market...a market that really didn't exist because the user always had a choice of what to install for FREE. Now you think the US Government should go with Adobe Flash BECAUSE they have the monopoly in the market? I'm glad I don't live my life and make decisions based on which way the wind is blowing. Now...talk about being sickened.

I'm going to watch it live on TV, and I'm going to videotape it and then transfer it to DVD (we don't have a harddisk recorder for the TV yet). It will be nice, because then you will have the feeling of how the day has been.

And off course, it will be historical material.

Yeah there is like a million sites streaming it live. It's pretty much going to be everywhere tuesday.
