Microsoft has yet again started a new ad campaign trying to get people to buy PCs rather than Macs. The new ads show a young lady that would like to get a laptop with a 17" screen for under $1000.00. She first tries the Apple Store (Funny how she goes there first) and then comes out empty handed saying that the only sub 1000 dollar computer they had was a 13". She then goes on to another stores and buys a HP laptop. In the following keynote I show you what I think and give a realistic cost of ownership comparison between the baseline MacBook Pro and a HP of the same caliper.

I know this will make a lot of your mad so please post a comment and let me know what you think.

/sigh....

Why cant mac people and windows people JUST GET ALONG???

I read a shit ton of mudslinging comments ANYTIME i read ANYTHING about Apple OR Windows.

ENOUGH WITH OS BASHING ALREADY! GEEKS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SMARTER THAN THIS!

People buy computers for what they NEED them for, and hello A MAC IS A PC TOO,
PC means Personal Computer and is neither Apple Or Microsoft. Its a machine....
Built by a company, whether it be HP, Dell, Sony, Apple, whatever.
People chose what they need to get the job done, for some people a Mac is great, for others, it isnt.
And lets not forget about Linux too, still a very viable opponent.

You all are missing the point of the ad, yes it is a push for windows but the object at hand was the consumer had a budget and had to stay within that certain amount of money.
She was able to find what she needed at an affordable price, and hence, won the challenge.

Point being, arguing at all about anything is pointless, people buy what they need at the best price for what they need it for.

If a 1600.00 MacBook Pro works for you, awesome!!
If a 600.00 HP does what you need it too, super!!!

Get a computer, a PC, whatever you need because it works for you. You know what you need to get done...
Microsoft doesn't know you.
Apple doesn't know you.
You're just a customer to them.
You are the only one that knows what you need the best!

Screw Mac, Screw Windows.... YEAH I WENT THERE

Because if you REALLY need to get things done, you don't waste your time in the GUI anyway, you work in CMD or Terminal at the CLI or Command Line Interface.
Command line doesn't care if you are Windows.
Command line doesn't care if you are Mac.
Comman line is there to do one thing and one thing only.
Accept and execute your commands!!

/end rant

I'm glad Microsoft made this ad. I agree with it, Apple is overpriced for certain budgets. They fail to offer cheaper range laptops. Hopefully them making this point will push for lower prices at Apple.

Typical Microsoft, not disclosing all the details like how Vista is just one disaster after the next.

@Dom Leong

Not really, asus has a board (you can find a review in my blog), that blows away the mac pro. Providing more complete pci-e 2.0 technology and up to 144gbs of 1333mhz ddr3, as well as support for the xeon 5500 series 3.2ghz nehalem processors , not just topping out at the 2.93ghz. It's better in every regard, and you can build it for less than 2400 usd, in a better case, with a better power supply and better video, supporting 6 channel raid.

I develop enterprise level systems for a living, and this includes custom, integrated hardware solutions on a massively scalable level. I'm sure you know everything about everything considering you think virtualizing an environment is a good option for production, and probably have a copy of cubase, but really, there's a lot you don't know, so you're opening your mouth without doing any research.

Gaming is substantially better on a pc. The best thing you can stick in a mac pro by their current driver support is a 9800 GX2, and they don't offer full support for all the features, so the card is neutered. The mac book pro also uses 1066mhz memory, which is well below the 1600mhz standard of gaming quality.

I'd rather have to find drivers than not have the ability to use decent hardware.

This commentary is garbage. The video is a fake (microsoft ads aren't that good), and your ability to compare products is even worse. Just as a note, iwork doesn't even remotely come close to the functionality of office. It's like comparing ms paint to photoshop cs 4.

The macbook you compared to the HP starts at 1600 usd, so you're really just proving the video's point. For that same price, you can get a laptop with 4gb of ddr3 that has a GTX 280M, which is better than anything any apple machine can run.

@Edward Gelb

That doesn't make any sense at all, the comparison here is related to hardware available for the price. The only time it would make a difference is if the hardware was too new to be supported by OS X (which, in video cards, is pretty much anything newer than 2 years old. Peripherals, good chance they won't work at all (see: HP's entire line of industry standard large format printers, most creative products, etc.)). Operating systems are almost entirely irrelevant in this discussion other than you aren't allowed to install OS X on anything without fruit on it.

Regardless of whether she's an actress or not, the point of the commercial still stands: If you're on a tight budget, a Mac isn't for you.

There's an interesting bit of controversy surrounding this ad. Note the bald guy walking past the mApple Store (which she refers to as the "Mac Store"). He's shown in the next shot only a few feet from his starting position as she exits the store. The question is whether or not she actually went inside and looked around or not. People have also noted that the woman shown is actually an actress, leading to even greater suspicion. Though I think the ad is getting more attention than it probably deserves, the observations are interesting. Thoughts?

I've used PC's for almost 20 years and just in the past 6 months i've bought 2 Mac Pros (2008 8core and 2009 8core), Macbook, and a MacBook Pro. i switched all my computers over to mac and run windows on a couple of them Through VMware. PC's are a waste of time in my opinion. i wouldn't trust a PC to work on a $50,000 recording project for one of my customers. PC users are jelous and use "Gaming" as the reason why windows is better. hell you can run windows nativley and game on a mac? whats stopping you? if you want quality, i applaud you, if you want makeshift pc's then why are you bitching apples too expensive, you've made your choice, are you trying to convert apple followers to buy pc instead? hell the day i switched to apple is the best decision in my life, next to marrying my wife.
