I have had a few laptops in my lifetime thus far. None are top of the line, and the list consist of 2 ThinkPad T20s, a Lenovo N100 3000, a HP 530, and now my HP 6735s.

My fastest until now was the Lenovo N100 3000. It had a dual core Intel and 1GB of RAM. This one is a lot faster, boasting a dual core AMD and 2GB of RAM. Let’s get back to the topic at hand.

In the box, the whole package must have weighed just under 10lbs. I am bad at guessing weight, but this is one light piece of equipment. It came packaged very nicely. Neat, good protection and they used as little material as possible which is good for the environment.

The casing for the 6735s is very minimalist. It’s all black, with a matte top cover. Once opened the keyboard is surrounded by a bit of gloss, the same goes for the screen border, mouse, Wi-Fi, and power buttons.

The 15.4” widescreen has a glossy coating, which is nice to look at as opposed to the matte LCDs which show a lot of fingerprints and such. It’s clear, bright, and it’s native resolution is 1280 x 800.
Atop the LCD screen is a web cam. It is small and unobtrusive; however, I have not had the chance to test it out, as there seems to be no feature built into Windows that will allow me to. Also I noticed the built in mic is on the bottom of the laptop or the front so to speak, with the headphone jack and mic jack. At first it didn’t pick up to well, but just increase the volume under the microphone settings and it picks up quite well. Just sit a little further back when you use it. The laptop also did a good job of switching between the headphones and built in speakers.

The laptop features a DVD device with LightScribe. The drive tray is sturdy and resistant to abuse. The eject button is large and hard to miss, so you don’t have to go on a treasure hunt to eject the disc. It’s DVD-RW with dual layer which is another way of putting DVD-RAM.

There are 4 USB ports. 2 on the left and 2 on the right, meaning, no issues with your mouse or any peripherals that your intend to use. It was always an issue for me when the mouse didn’t have enough cord to reach over to the right side when it was plugged into the left side. Thanks HP for the consideration. The remaining ports include a VGA out, Ethernet, headphone, mic, and a flash card reader.

Once powered up the HP 6735s begins to immediately install Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Most laptops I have gotten usually have Vista pre-installed; this one has the set-up installed. Usually I have to just pick a background and my name and they do the rest, this does the entire process from the very beginning. I am not happy with Vista Home Premium, I always use Ultimate. Also brand name PCs like to include a lot of junk along with their installs. Some of the stuff may be useful to certain individuals; however it is not to me. I immediately deleted the programs. MacAfee was the factory choice for virus protection, and immediately after installation it said my virus definitions were out of date. That’s not a good sign. Many will disagree with my choice, but Windows Live OneCare is my choice AV.

It’s no secret that Windows 7 is Microsoft’s next operating system. So I decided to install Windows 7 Beta 1 as my OS. I installed it as the main OS. Many will say that making a beta operating system my main choice is a bad idea. Well it’s no problem for me. I backup daily, and have all the operating systems I need in case I need to reinstall 7 or Vista or even XP. Besides, HP packed Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit with the laptop. Seven works very good on my system, I just have to figure out a few drivers and I am good to go. It is more efficient and faster than Vista is. Just read up on 7 if you want to know more about it.

It’s not very powerful in the graphics department. The system has an ATI Radeon HD 3200. It has 256MB of dedicated memory; however shared it has 1150MB. This allows Windows Aero to run flawlessly on both 7 and Vista. Better in 7 since Windows uses virtualization to produce a DX10 GPU to allow aero to work on weaker machines. I have not been able to test a game, but I have a copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that I can use to test it. I will report my findings to those whom want to inquire.

The HP 6735s is not a gaming machine. It can however become a desktop replacement for those low on space. It plays music, displays pictures, and renders video flawlessly. It has a built in G adapter that can reach quite far. Picks up some signals stronger than my N adapter did, but I still want to replace the G adapter with an N. While typing this I am using 36% of my RAM, and that is a figure that is always changing. I believe while I am idle I use 24%. My desktop has 2GB of RAM and on Vista while aero is running I use 46% of my RAM. Seven uses 34-35%. It’s a very good laptop. It’s speedy enough to be a desktop replacement, and light enough to be mobile. I recommend the HP 6735s to those who need the power of a desktop, but the mobility of a laptop all in one. Again, this is not a mobile gaming station, so don’t expect the best.

On an end note, a few things that would have made this the best is a BD-ROM, HDMI out, built in Wireless N, and perhaps a gigabit port. However, you can’t always have everything. For a under $1,000 laptop it’s pretty good.

I give the HP 6735s a 4 out of 5.
