Download Our Windows 7 Tips!

I'm sure almost everyone knows about OpenOffice.org, the free Office Suite for Windows, OS X, and Linux. But some people, like me, might have an older Mac that OpenOffice is not compatible on. I have found a solution to that problem. A program called NeoOffice. It is exactly alike to OpenOffice but is more compatible with older computers. I personally think NeoOffice is better than OpenOffice for Mac anyway. To get NeoOffice visit,

http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

Then navigate to the Downloads Tab at the top of your screen. After that, they will ask you to donate. You do not have to but if you want to, go ahead. After that, it will ask you if you have a Power-PC Mac or an Intel Mac. (Older Mac users want to click Power-PC) If you don't know what you have move your mouse to the top-left of your screen. You will see the Apple logo. Click on it. A menu will appear under the logo. Then click on About This Mac. It will tell you.

So that is how you get NeoOffice, an alternative to OpenOffice.org
Thanks for reading!

The easiest way to download NeoOffice is to go to GetNeo.com. (Well, I'm the developer of that website so I'm probably biased.)

I use both OpenOffice 3 and NeoOffice. But I also use iWork '08 and use it primarily. I am using the trial of iWork '09 now and it is great. But for free, whether it be OpenOffice or NeoOffice, I still cant decide. Probably NeoOffice.

OpenOffice3 (most current version) is a really good alrternative, that is, once you get the file types set right to work with MS Office. Meaning, when you save the file it automatically wants to save it at as a OpenOffice file type until you correct it. Many people are starting to go over to Apple machines, but it doesn't mean it's popular enough to be able to widely distribute a text file in OpenOffice format; no matter how good it is.

Then again for MS Office for Mac, well, it's the only program that has ever given me a kernel panic and Entourage (MS's answer to Outlook on a Mac) still has code it in for Outlook 04'.

So I guess it comes down to choosing the lesser of two evil's, but as of right now if you really work with word documents, power point presentations, and excel documents on a Mac it would be wonderful for me to sit here and say OpenOffice is your solution but it's not. As far as Entourage goes (which no other suite like OpenOffice offers) it isn't great and I don't like it, but it handles a true Microsoft Exchange e-mail account like an exchange is meant to be, not as an imap account like Mail.app does or Thunderbird(can't wait for Snow Leopard with full support for exchange in Mail.app). I have read cracks and tweaks for making Thunderbird right with exhange accounts but I don't think you should have to crack or tweak a program to make it work how you need it to.

I guess this is just my $0.02, but as someone who really needs the ability to share files with anyone and everyone, I have to go with MS Office for Mac unfortunately.

If you are looking for a simple word processor that runs on a Mac with a PPC or Intel processor running OS X 10.4+ Tiger or OS X 10.5+ Leopard, I recommend BEAN (http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html). I use it when I don't need all the options that the word processor in OpenOffice provides. Of course, if you need a spreadsheet, database, or a presentation program, you will need NeoOffice or OpenOffice.

From the website:
Bean is a small, easy-to-use word processor (or more precisely, a rich text editor), designed to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. Bean is Open Source, fully Cocoa, and is available free of charge! MS Word, OpenOffice, etc. try to be all things to all people. But sometimes you just want the right tool for the job. That is Bean's niche."

I've heard that before from people using OO on the Mac Platform.

No more X11 for OO on Mac ? That is GREAT news for Mac users !

note: X11 on Linux is GREAT, but looks UGLY on Mac

And for those of you who don't know. OpenOffice no longer requires X11 to run on the Intel Macs. I am running OpenOffice Beta 3 natively. I love open source software. But if it needs X11 to run on Mac I say forget it. Not because it doesn't work, but because it always looks damn ugly. I'm picky, I know.
