I was looking at a tech article a couple of months ago about a external backup device for windows based PCs that is like the apple time machine device.

What was that device? :) (memory lacks)

There are external cases devices like the one from netgear but for some bloo** stupid reason netgear thought people like us wouldn't need a professional backup system and priced it well beyond our means. Is there anything else like that in the $400-$600AUS range

Curiously, CNET reviews a lot of backup solutions but seems to like none of them...

I just like the device frm seagate, problem is they don't sell it in Australia as i said above. I loike the device because it does the backup for you. I'm ot good at doing backups so i wouldn't know how to do it or exactly what specifically i would need to backup at a specific point in time.

PC? ...as in tower or desktop? ...and why does it have to be external? Buy an internal DVD-RW. Discs are cheap. The media is portable, light and small.

Or locked in a special off-shore safety deposit box, there is located a 1 TB, fire-wire, external HDU, and if you just wire me some funds... :-D

Time Machine will work on Mac and PCs.

But you found what you wanted.
