So after my initial cave in and purchase of the 3gs, I think I had a little bit of buyers remorse. I mean, that my 1st gen Iphone still works fine, you know? But I was ready for some new features, and initially I did not feel I was getting much. Over the past week though, those feelings have changed.
I think the new Iphone is going to get exponentially better in the weeks, months ahead, as developers have the tools now and the hardware to really start using this device for so many things.
For me, the thing I have now found that I love the most is the video feature, and I am quickly becoming a dope for You tube videos.....
I mean now you can go right into any store and review items right from the shelf, and shoot it right to your you tube account, it's crazy and it works great. You can crop your videos on the fly and they are actually pretty good resolution as you see here. This one uploaded via wi fi in about a minute!! My bet is that this will drown the "FLip" Video market.
Second, the new mapping with the compass built into it, is actually pretty useful, for both traffic scenarios and simply walking around town (if you have a good 3 g connect)
The spacious new drive in the 3gs will of course come in handy for all of the video as well as the picture taking. The new autofocus feature is quite good and the pictures in good lighting are very acceptable.
Games all seem much more responsive, and the graphics card in the 3gs really help out the 3-d games like Crash bandicoot 3-d cart and others alike. The controls simply feel more responsive.
The new voice command feature thus far is a bit of a let down. When it works, it works great,, you can call up your Ipod music, by simply stating the bands name and song, and of course voice calling a person in your address book when it works is great. My guess is we will be seeing a firmware update for this one soon. It is a great tool and Apple really needs to firm this one up, cause they can do alot more with this, when properly working.
Voice memos is a neat little app as well, and of course comes in the 3.0 software. I like and use this tool.
I will be interested to see what the notifications feature does in the Settings app for future applications.
All in all, this feels like a preparation for some really excellent upgrades that will be coming the 3gs's way soon, and i believe the 1st Gen owners will likely be seeing the end of the lifecycle of free OS updates beyond this one. Of course I have no clue that this is true, of course, but I have doubts that Apple will continue to develop for it much longer. That said, I love my 1st gen Iphone, and it is still a great and useful wifi device. I can still make skype calls with it just fine!! So it is still a phone in a small sense, when I am in wifi zones, and of course is and excellent Ipod for the Truck.
But my 3gs, is a purchase I can say I am getting comfortable with and actually looking forward to the near future of this phone. If you are a 1st gen Iphon owner I would say it is a definate good upgrade.
If you already own a 3g,, I'd wait till next year. I bet the next version will be over the top, and I will be crying then, cause I'll only be a year into my newly extended 2 year deal with the Crooks in Orange.
I was thinking about jumping on the 3gs wagon, but I feel like I should wait on the HTC Touch Pro2

Over the July 4th weekend, i had some issues getting my vids to You tube quickly, and you tube does state on their site that server load can dictate videos taking up to several hours to upload if traffic is real heavy. In both of my occasions where this happened, i simply canceled the upload and cleared it from my You tube page (it seemes to happen on the rendering process on You tube) and tried again and it worked fine. Best of luck.
Very interesting. I just love my first gen. I'm sure I would love the upgrade but I still think I might wait a bit. I'm not sure. I guess I kind of feel...if it's not broke...don't fix it? haha
