I think that this year consoles have good features, but none of them have what it takes to be really the champion because of some drawback. For example the Xbox 360 and its RRod (red ring of death), and the PS3 and its lack of some major titles like Halo 3 and its lack of "unlockability", and the Wii with its lack of good games and bad graphics. Other examples are the PSP with its lack of qwerty keyboard and touchscreen, and the Nintendo DS(i) with its gameboy-like graphics. If any of this consoles overcome this drawbacks I personally think they can become the champ of the console wars. Comment what you think.

Overall, a great time to be a gamer. I'll have to put my vote on the PS3 as the current winner - wirelessly updated blu-ray player, media center and excellent games to kill way more time than I really have. The PS3 is also the largest CPU of the bunch ergo it has the longest staying power.
Having said that we all know that the next best gaming system is just around the corner...

I don't think that we're going to see a "perfect" or a landslide victory for consoles for a long time. I mean, consoles have been out for a little over 20 years now, not to mention computer gaming before that. So electronic games have been around for a little while now. And in that time, we have not found the perfect console. And we never will. Because of the simple fact that technology is developing at a rate that we cannot keep up with. And console manufacturers, such as Microsoft and Sony are aware of that, which is why they have to make kick ass games so that people don't have to worry about the technology side of the console.

what about the "console" comming out called onlive

bad grafics, lack of games-it probably is just harder to hack though

I've owned an Atari 2600, an Intellivision, a Colecovision (I think that's what it was called), a Nintendo Entertainment System, an original Gameboy, a Sega Master System, a Playstation, a PS2, a PSP, an Xbox, a Wii, and a PS3, plus I've played PC games for a long time too (although I just stopped PC gaming within the last few years).

Not only does that list of consoles indicate my age and tenure as a gamer, but I can say that I've pretty much seen it all over the years. Safe to say, you young guys don't know how lucky you are to be playing with the technology you have now! But hey, even I can't get enough and I know where my allegiance lies.

I continue to game on my PSP during bathroom breaks, sometimes playing a full game on Madden 2007 (much to the ire of my wife), and at bedtime. The Xbox completely bores me and I only have it because I took it on trade for a refurbished Motorola smartphone, but my 5 year-old son plays it every now and then. The Wii was a purchase for the kids, and even though we used to love playing Wii sports as a family, and my wife and I occasionally battled on Wii Fit, it's really a very disappointing console. Every title I have ever bought for that console has gotten just a few minutes of gameplay, and then it ends up being discarded or traded in at EBGames. Right now the Wii's main function is allowing the active USB port to charge my PS3 controllers, but other than that, it's gathering dust and I can't believe I overpaid for it two Christmases ago while succumbing to the feeding frenzy on eBay.

Which brings me to my PS3, which has become the centre of my home theatre multimedia experience. It doesn't need to be repeated that dollar-for-dollar you won't find a better Blu-Ray player out there, especially one that utilizes a wireless connection to constantly update itself. Then you add to it the consistently excellent games for that platform, the ability to stream movies/music/photos from my laptop, the ability to download movie trailers and game demos, and the fact that online multiplayer doesn't cost extra a la Xbox, and in my mind you have a huge winner. There's never been a title on Xbox that has made me want to buy one, and although I'm an avid FPS player, I have never ever played Halo! (I can hear the gasps now!)

Everyone has their own opinion, and I'm not saying that PS3 rules and everything else bites. I'm saying that for me, the proof is undeniably obvious in my household. The PS3 gets used daily, whether it be for gaming or other multimedia purposes. I love it, and I'm thrilled to have one. Call of Duty, InFamous, Burnout Paradise and even Rock Band 2 will never gather dust in my house!

Own a Wii and a 360. The main thing I hate about the Wii is the designers locking down the system for more entertainment uses where the 360's designers added this flexibility to theirs. My 360 can play DVD's/AVI's & such. Have never understood why Nintendo would put a DVD player on a game unit...but not allow it to play music/MP3's/AVI's/DVD's.

There's the PS3 issue of randomly not playing game discs. I also don't like that it doesn't have a disc tray, I don't trust anything that require disc inserts, just in case something goes wrong like a disc being jammed.

I agree with the unlockability, after warranty is out of date there should be no harm in modding your system to play backups. It only takes a younger brother/sister/nephew to break you disc and render it unplayable. having backups is essential given the price of games.

I have a modded PSP but not for game copying (I think the PSP should be with the Wii in the lack of good games category, there are only a small few I think are any good). I use it for it's homebrew apps like bookR, the PDF reader.

As for the whole PS3 vs. 360, I think the only let down on the 360 is the lack of Blu-Ray playback.
Actually a major issue is the fact that it doesn't even play HD-DVD as standalone, it requires an external player. Bit of a kop out i think. Why play HD games discs but not movies?
At least with it's mpeg2 encoding Blu-ray streaming or playing from portable media could be a possibility yet, no reason why they shouldn't.

I am still on the side of xbox though, I preferred PS2 over the original xbox but not this generation.
The fact that Sky TV are going to be broadcasting digital TV to the xbox this autumn I think is also pretty cool.
