Dear Lord Geek Community, I am over fifty, female and I am a geek. There I have confessed it. I have always been a Geek, I think I just didn't know it. It was not a term used when I was growing up, nerd was more likely. I always liked to take things apart and have the corner filled with multiple PC in various states of destruction to prove it. When I see a gadget I've got have it, occasionally I have to remind myself things like you don't really need a camera that can film underwater since the chances of me using underwater is rather slim. Anything involving a computer I am the one who my friends ask for help or what something is. I do think that part of being a Geek is having a stubborn streak, if something isn't working correctly I have to find out why and fix it even if it takes what seems like forever. I am also a joiner, so I have an account with Twitter, Jaiku, Plurk, Pownce and Friendfeed. I have multiple blogs, this one and also Musing and Gadgets and on Vox Ramblin Words Currently I am working on setting up a website using Drupal. Anyway that's my morning confession for today.

Well, I might be a "member of the geek community", but I don't consider myself a "geek" (or anything other than human-male, for that matter). I'm 46; and "geek" was a word when I was growing up. I think it meant you had funny hair, or zits, or some other form of industrial cooties.

I was the kid who took things apart (not so unusual) and was able to put them back together (very unusual). Now I'm the guy everyone calls whenever they break something. Anything! But, unlike you, I am not much of a joiner.

I think most people in the world are lazy. I used to think people were idiots, but that's hardly the case. Most have just been lulled to sleep by the advertising industry. Technology has turned the human race into a bunch of vegetables, who can't (won't) do anything without a touch-screen, joystick, or remote control. Sure, they might know how to install an operating system, or troubleshoot a printer... But ask them to run a lawnmower, or paint a windowsill, or even take out the garbage, and they cry like babies!

Everyone expects their latest products or gadgets to do all their work for them. And as a result, nothing good is getting done! Every day I have to walk around my neighborhood and pick up the trash that people are constantly throwing out their car windows. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who even notices it. Or if anyone else DOES see it, they think it's someone else's job to pick it up!

Most of the world outside my door is a loud, smelly, disgusting place; with the occasional "pretty spot", full of WalMarts, BestBuys, and Convenience stores. The streets are packed bumper-to-bumper, with car-loads of angry, impatient people who don't even have the good sense to turn off their cellphones before climbing behind the wheel. And all the while, the powers-that-be expect us to be good little citizens, and just keep on breeding more happy consumers for the corporations to prey upon.

To me, the word "geek" means nothing more than "happy consumer", who's supposed to care about nothing, except having the latest and greatest toys. Well... I'm a nature boy at heart. Civilization is doing nothing but pi$$ing me off!
