What state is Java in?

It has been a long time since I have written anything in Java. Now I am in a situation where I think going multi-platform for the future is worth going back to Java. I have been in the Cocoa/.NET world for so long now, I don't know about the advances in the java langauge and platform. I know that when I was writing Java it had a horrible reputation for running slow. Actually, there were a lot of complaints about Java at that time, but that seemed to be the main one. How do you feel about Java… Continue

Where to get supported?

Hey all, I don't want this message to be very long. This is a simply question that I just need a good answer for. Basically, the story is that I am starting a class for a local college for iPhone development. I am not sure yet how many students will be there, so sorry I can't give that piece of information. The college currently does not have a lot of Mac machines, if any at all. This is the only apple development related course that they will have, it this is more of a workshop anyway. Okay,… Continue

If you are a developer that has to work with Windows everyday, I'm sorry. I know a lot of us doing enterprise development have to deal with Windows. Don't get me wrong, I am extremely thankful for all of the great tools and the great C# language. I love my job. The only thing I don't like is Windows. Windows, you don't need glass, you need new UI controls!

Hi all, So, I want to be completely honest up front. This is a vent post about Microsoft's decision to put so much focus on everything with out accomplish, what I believe, should be a primary goal for them if they are trying to capture more of the consumer audience with a user experience that matches (or at least gets close to) that of Mac OS X. Now, looking back on previous versions of Windows, you see the same trend. Tab controls are ugly, buttons are ugly, forms are ugly... you get the idea… Continue

Should you really have to pay for virtual machines? Not with VirtualBox.

For some time now, I have been using boot camp for doing .NET coding for work. The times that I need to work from home, it comes in handy, as I don't have a dedicated windows machine at home. While I am very thankful that Apple has created boot camp, I did find it very annoying to switch and back so often, but I was not willing to pay for virtualization software. I'm here to tell you that if you are in the same situation, you don't have to pay for it either. Sun has developed what they call th… Continue
