So, I just saw this little intro video Google has about it's new Chrome OS. What caught my attention was what was said towards the end of the video. Chrome OS is basically designed to be a "stateless" OS. This basically means that the OS will not exist "on your computer" , but rather, be loaded on boot from a remote location.
Now, this isn't a new idea. As a matter of fact, it has been around for years. Citrix has been doing it, even Mac OS X has this ability. Basically you set up a server and…

Man I realized how long it has been since I posted here... Things have been rather crazy, but I'm back!
So! What is there to report. I wanted to take a moment and talk about Net Neutrality. This has been a hot topic as of late with the FCC moving towards a ruling on it. The prevailing trend is that, unless you are a service provider, you are for Net Neutrality.
Defined rather simply, net neutrality is the concept that a service provider cannot in any way filter the content you are able to acce…

So, the next big cat from Apple is being released this Friday. As the clock counts down, there are still analysts scrambling to predict what it will be like and what it means for Apple. Some are predicting that this release is little more than PR to fight back against Windows 7. Microsoft has been heating up the OS Cold War as of late. This means a couple of things: a) Apple has been making traction in the market, and b) Microsoft is taking this seriously.
Others are suggesting that it is Apple…

I forgot to mention this, but I wanted to throw it out there. If you are ACN or APSP, you can sign up to go to the annual must-attend event for Mac System Administrators: the Advanced Professional Services Tech Camp. It will be held at the Q Center in Chicago, IL, Nov. 15-20th.
There isn't an official page up for it yet, but stay tuned for more information.

So, I went to a party for a friend of mine who is moving to a different state. While there, I was introduced to some wonderful people who are friends of his. Upon introduction, I got asked the question, am I one of John's Yelper friends. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I soon found out.
If you have not been to the site yelp.com, go. It is actually really interesting. It is sort of social networking meets reviews. At it's simplest form, it is a place that you can go and write rev…

Recently a number of Google Apps. came out of their beta stage and entered world of 1.0. An interesting move, not in and of itself, but rather because it brought up the issue of what Beta really means these days. It used to be that "beta" really meant that a software was in the testing phase, not ready for prime production. Often times, these tests were private, open to only a few people.
With Google Apps, however, the playing field changed. These beta apps were open to just about everyone. Mor…

I saw this article on Gizmodo the other day for a robot that is labelled as "The First Real Robot for Girls".
.
Seriously now... what geeky girls do they know? In my mind, any really geeky girl would ask the following:
1. Where are the rocket launchers?
2. Are the small ones carrier drones for the bigger one?
3. Does it have an attack mode?
4. Does it…

I just want to take a moment to say: I hate Flash.
Now, don't get me wrong, I think Adobe makes some amazing products. I am a Photoshop addict and I think their creative suites are unparalleled.
That being said, Flash drives me bonkers. And I say this for several reasons. One, it is proprietary. And I think web technologies shouldn't be proprietary. That is my personal opinion, but still... if you are going to put up a page that you want everyone to see, why not use a web standard (like javasc…

I recently read an article that brought up the debate of Twitter in the world stage. Specifically, it referred to Twitter being used as a primary source of both information and communication in Iran during the recent elections. Apparently, even the US Intelligence Agencies are watching Twitter to gleam small bits of information that might trend and lead them to investigate further.
What was interesting in the article was that they also covered the weaknesses of Twitter. Namely: This is a 2 year…

So, having just re-imaged my machine and installing VMWare Fusion, I am working on creating VMs. The Windows side is easy: Vista (because I got it for free) and Windows 7 (yay beta testing!). The Linux side is a bit more confusing. I have used Ubuntu for a while, so that is a definite possibility... however, my work place, like many, run off of Red Hat. And the only distros I know of that are close to Red Hat are Fedora, and CentOS. So, these are all possibilities. I am also putting a Solaris 10…

So, my original iPhone that I have had for two years seems to have run away on me. I think it got off at a different stop than I did on the train this morning. Now, I am sure that I could have waited until Monday to see if anyone turned it in at the train station. It probably would have been the most financially sound thing to do... but not the geekiest.
Nope, I ran out and got an iPhone 3G. I know that there are a lot of rumors about new phones coming out. But if there is one thing that I have…

So, this past Thursday, I went to take a test. I hate tests. But, after all the sweating through it, I did it. The exam was for OS X 10.5 Server certification. And I passed!... by the skin of my teeth... but I passed! I am now certified in OS OS X Leopard Server and an official Apple Certified Technical Professional. Only three more exams to go before I have full ACSA certification. Up next: Directory Services!

So, this is my first time posting here, but I am excited to see that there is such a huge and friendly geek community out there. I've been a computer and photography geek for most of my life, both for work and play. I am also a Mac geek, (I used to be a Mac Genius for Apple), but I am a platform agnostic kinda guy ;-) Feel free to drop a line anytime. I am also on twitter @unclelouie9841 I hope to get more involved as I can and meet new people in the geek community!
