Gay Marriage Opponents Now Want Legal Definition of Christmas

Opponents of gay marriage who believe marriage should only apply to heterosexuals now wish to restrict access to another sacred institution: Christmas. “Much like traditional marriage, the traditions of Christmas have been under assault for many years now,” says Brent Slabroller, leader of The Defense of Traditions Coalition. “In order to preserve those traditions, we’re calling for a constitutional amendment that defines Christmas as only for Christians.” For years non-Christians have adopted… Continue

Farewell Linux, for now

I thought I'd found a solution to my problem with Flash and Java. I read a blog that contended Sun and Macromedia hadn't come out with 64 bit compatible versions, which is what I had installed. So I downloaded and installed the 32 bit Kubuntu, then the 32 bit version of SUSE 11, then Mandriva 2009 and ARRGHHH, no luck with any of them. I'm seriously beginning to suspect my computer. This is the first ready-built PC I've owned since my first 500Mhz Gateway rig. All my desktops since then have b… Continue

Kubuntu on the desktop

I had a hard drive fail last month, leaving me with a single, 500GB HD containing Vista. The drive that failed (a 1.5 year old Maxtor: fail is the right word) had Ubuntu and SUSE 11 on it. I haven't had the time or money to install another hard drive, so this last weekend I stole 50GB from Windows G:\ and installed Kubuntu 8.10 Beta because I love KDE 4.0. It's great to be back using Linux on a regular basis again, but I still have one gripe that has persisted from distro to distro; the… Continue

15 words that certainly should never be used by free thinkers

There are certain words that should be avoided by atheists, rationalists and free thinkers in their writings and conversations. They can, however, be frequently found in the writings of theists, the irrational and those who prefer not to think. (Yes, the headline was meant to be ironic and sarcastic.) This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list. I’m simply suggesting the most common words I encounter in religious and philosophical discussions. They reflect a certainty about reality that thinking… Continue

Cleo, learning to poop and pee like a big dog

Dog owners/lovers will understand my being extremely pleased that Cleo, my little love, is learning to wait to relieve herself until she gets outdoors.

She spends the day with me at work and until recently kept having the occasional "accident" in the store (not a huge problem, our floo… Continue

This is how fascism comes

Tim Wise has written a thoughtful and enlightening article in the Red Room that challenges Americans to either take an active stand against the encroaching fascism in our country or reap the rewards of silence. "For those who have seen the ugliness and heard the vitriol emanating from the mouths of persons attending McCain/Palin rallies this past week–what with their demands to kill Barack Obama, slu… Continue

Geeks, My Profile page

As egotistic as it may sound, I'm totally pleased with the look of my profile page. I wish I could port the appearance to my primary blog (minus the ads). Continue

Getting it figured out

In desperation I decided to try another browser to see if my problems today with posting blog entries and adjusting my theme (now I've got my coffee beans all around me; I wonder if Mona's profile has bacon in it). sure enough, Flock has no issues with Geeks. So now I know that it's an issue within Firefox. I've been having random issues with Firefox, this is simply the latest. So until I figure out what FF's problem is, or until a newer version becomes available, I'll be sticking with Flock fo… Continue

One issue down, another crops up

I hope the issues I'm seeing today are a result of tweaking in the background and that once those tweaks are complete full functionality will return. I found I could post a blog entry by switching from Fire fox to I.E. (yuck). Now I want to find out why adding an image to the sides of my profile page isn't working. When I select the image option on the theme page, then select upload an image, nothing happens. An explorer window should open to allow me to select an image on my hard drive, but it… Continue

To blog or not...

Earlier I tried to create a blog entry here. However, due to so much active content on the page, the page never stops trying to load. As a result, the post wouldn't publish. All I had was a continuously loading page. I used the browser "stop loading" button, it didn't help. So we'll see if this entry publishes before I send off a bug report. Continue

The fragmented network

There's been a lot of talk lately on social sites like Friendfeed about the separation of blogs from their comments, as more and more of the conversations about a blog post take place on other sites (e.g. Friendfeed, Disqus). Some people appreciate the fact that a conversation is spawned by their post where ever it takes place while others want to keep their content and the comments it produces together in one place, on their site. I see a similar fragmentation taking place within the social ne… Continue

Appearances and disappearances

On the same day I discover I no longer have an Outsider or Jeber's Juke Joint blog on Lockergnome.com this new opportunity comes along to join Chris in gnoming up the internets. Perhaps I won't go through withdrawal after all. Now excuse me for a few minutes, my new ComputerGeeks catalog just came in the mail and I must add to my wishlist. Continue
