SciFi channel aims to shed geeky image with new name.
The comments are pretty negative about this change. People who either a) fit the "geek" image SciFi is trying to bust or b) fit the alleged demographic are both offended. As a 48-year-old female who has been reading scifi for at least 36 of those years, I agree. (I also like video games, BTW, and my teen daughters do, as well).
I recommend reading the commen…

Comments welcome and encouraged. I really need a computer I can use for school. The other computers will find homes with a niece currently in college, a niece planning to enroll in college and my elderly, near-sighted mom (the HP TouchSmart). Make my extended family happy for the holidays!
Thanks!

I just sent Chris an entry for the HP Magic Giveaway. He lives on the West Coast and isn't up this early, so I'll have to wait to see when he posts my entry. This is one case where earlier is better: part of the contest is to see how many comments each entry gets. There aren't too many entries so far, so maybe my chances are pretty good. I'll post when I get a link to my entry.

I've got two weeks before finals week. I've got an assortment of undone assignments and performance (take-home) exams to turn in. Two websites, one of which is due for peer review tomorrow. (And both will be critiqued by a committee.) Panic.

I actually rented a laptop for a month to be able to work on my homework, which involves using several Adobe products that are RAM-intensive. I had to return the laptop, and now I'm using a desktop that belongs to my sister, but it should be able to handle the software. I'll find out in a few minutes.
I had used my student loan money to pay bills, and didn't have enough left to buy a new computer. That will come when I get next semester's money. I'll also have to get the software, which will se…

I woke up with a caffeine hangover this morning. That's what I call it when you get home around 2 a.m. and have a soda with caffeine, then stay up for another hour and have to get up at 6 a.m. It's mostly gone now, but I wish I could sleep.
I had wanted to skip classes today because I had to work late last night because of the election. But, no, I have a test today - in my first class. So I'm waiting to get that over with and then I might go home. Because I'm feeling less than optimal right now…

I missed four days of school last week from being too tired. It didn't start out that way - it was just going to be Monday. Then Tuesday came along, and Wednesday. Because I was at home Wednesday, I answered the phone, and it was a friend who (I felt) needed companionship on a short trip. So I went with her, and the day was emotionally draining (we visited her sick dog at the ISU vet clinic).
Then there was trunk or treat at church, and by the time I got home I was wiped out. So I missed Thursd…

I miss my naps. And my free time. And playing computer games.
My days are now divided into wake up and get ready time, school time (8 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 9:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and work time (2 to 11 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday). There's not a lot of time between school time and work time and sometimes I'm a bit late to work. I try to cut my supper break short to make up for it.
I'm behind on classwork, too. We rented a computer by the week, partly so I could do work at…

I'm hoping everyone gets that by now. I've got other blogs: one about my life, one for my creative writing (haven't added to that one for awhile), one in support of a semi-political issue that has not passed, so I don't need it any more.
Since I'm 47, a mom, wife, worker, etc., my perspective will be a little different from people who live on campus or with their parents, or who work part time or don't have kids. That's what I'm offering - my POV, FWIW.
And, everything on here will be mine or…

On Wednesday, I made a cell phone call before heading into the building and going to class. That call was important, but made me a couple of minutes late. As a result, I didn't get the seat I'm used to, with the computer that has the fonts I downloaded and copies of my work. I have copies of my work on my USB drive, but I had to download the fonts again - twice.
At first there was no computer for me at all. The instructor had me use her computer when she was done demonstrating something for the…

I was nodding off in my first class today and wishing I could leave early, go home and take a nap before work. I get out of class at 1 p.m. and go to work at 2 p.m. Yay. (deadpan tone)
I can't leave early: my husband has the car and will pick me up at 1, and a classmate has my Dreamweaver book. I'm not leaving without it today. I had loaned it to him Tuesday til today, but I want to start reading the next chapter over the weekend - this is a Tuesday-Thursday class.
I do have my supply of Hot T…

Granted, I love staying up late, especially on the computer. I would love to sleep in as late as possible. But it's just not possible - I've got class at 9:10 a.m., I've got to take the kids to school, and I have to be at work at 2 p.m.
I had planned to come home, change and go to bed. Instead I'm on the computer 1 1/2 hours later. Is there a self-help group for computer addicts? 'Cause I need something.
Sleep deprivation isn't good for moms, working people or college students, especially all…

I haven't had time and opportunity to participate in any of the campus events yet this year. Usually they have a hog roast the first day, there's a Mexican feast, karaoke, and much more. The only thing I got so far was the donuts they passed out the first day.
But today, I managed to walk quickly up to the student union between my second and third class. They're doing Spin the Wheel. The prizes include cans of pop (Pepsi products, not my fave), small candy bars, individual Little Debbie-style b…

I haven't yet figured out if I was involved in a new Olympic sport - synchronized parking, or discovered the real reason the Flying Dutchman was doomed to wander the seas forever - he couldn't find a parking spot.
I tried the parking lot just west of the AST building (Iowa Central) and wandered up and down for awhile, noticing the same vehicles going in various directions. Then I tried the northeast parking lot, waved at a friend driving a Dustex truck, and finally ended up in the far northwest…

I'm sure I'll get the hang of this college thing yet. If I survive.
It's tough being sick to begin with, but add to that working full time and starting college. Then, apparently I passed my illness along to my older daughter. I just let her sleep in today, partly because I wanted to so badly.
I've been thinking of buying a new computer. We've got a couple, but my husband will be taking his when he moves out (soon) and the others won't handle the software I'll be using in class. So, I'm beginni…

No, I didn't get enough sleep last night. But the laundry got done and the clothes were dry this morning. I had time last night to join geeks.pirillo.com, start a group and make a blog post. Starting the group included going to picnik.com, uploading a photo, adding the word Grammar, playing with the text a bit and saving it so I could upload for the group icon. I used an image from a 100-year-old photo that was in a bunch of photos Kent inherited when his mom died. It was actually on a postcard,…

I just started a two-year web technology program at Iowa Central Community College. It's been eight years since I went to school full time and I was working then, too. We'll see how it goes.
