20090316 - Return

I just got back from a one month detachment on the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) yesterday. Really, REALLY, glad to be back home where the internet works properly and showers aren't in a cubicle the size of a phone booth. I uploaded a clip of me walking from the smoke deck on the carrier to our work center, not a very good video, I blame my camera and my lack of carrying apparatus. This will be fixed the next time we go out to the boat in another month or so. Plan on buying a small digital video camera an… Continue

20090209 - New toys

So I went a little crazy yesterday. First of all, I had been up since 11 the previous night when I left my room and headed into the wide world of central California, HA! Ended up dragging my buddy Tim along for the experience. I knew before we headed out that I wanted a sewing machine and I was looking to spend a few hundred on the one I had been eyeballing. Found out at Jo-Anne's that they had the model higher from the one I wanted on sale for USD$550.… Continue

20090130 - Wings?

I took my "Wings" (EAWS) test a couple of days ago and while I didn't ace it, I did pass it sufficiently to go on to have my oral board/examination. I had that today. I was scared stiff going into this thing, I mean, my continued employ in the Navy was riding on this thing. I managed though. I got a couple of really stupid ones dead wrong and a couple of really hard ones straight on the head. As a result I can… Continue

20090124 - Where will you go?

So now that you're back from the boat detachment (as of January 20th, been a little busy) what will you do now? I'm going to Disney LAND! Actually, I'm in Anaheim California right now, sitting on a bed in "The Jolly Roger" hotel, with my friend Evan. Next bed over is Chelsea and Adam. Much fun is to be had today, I just woke everyone up at 0800, ripped Evan out of bed and had a cigarette, then drank a diet Rockstar, though it has to be about 120 degrees in the room and we have no refrigerator.… Continue

20090112 - Radio Silence...

I'm going on a boat detachment in a few days. As of this post I am going radio silent, meaning I am not currently with internet connection, nor will I have one for a little while, as I will be on an aircraft carrier for a week and some. This will be my first carrier... ANYTHING... kind of terrifying in an exhilarating sort of way almost like first kisses and virginity... I'll make sure to post some pics and what not up after I return, I will be missing all of the people I have met through this… Continue

20090109 - End of Leave

So it has been a pretty good two weeks (give or take a day or two). While I was home in Jacksonville I had a chance to sit and ruminate on life, build a deck for my mum, and I went and saw Seven Pounds this afternoon. Unfortunately I have to go back to Lemoore this weekend and then to work on Monday *gags dramatically*. Just wanted to post a picture up of the deck, maybe it's not a geek thing, but it is one hell of an accomplishment.… Continue

What I want to know... 20090101

I'm on leave! I'm in Jacksonville Florida for the next week and a half (or there-abouts) and I couldn't be happier with it. I went out with my mum and sister today, played BINGO with them at NAS Jacksonville, and wouldn't you know, I didn't win a thing! What I want to know however, is why an aircraft can't take-off in conditions such as heavy fog. I work on F/A-18C's at NAS Lemoore, and just like everywhere else in the San Joaquin Valley it gets foggy. We still launch aircraft in those c… Continue

20081221 Copyrights and such...

Recently I was watching an anime series online and happened to start using the chatroom feature listed on the same website. I've met some interesting personalities and had some equally interesting debates and such with these personalities. The personalities I met on this website were a bit much for me however. The discussion came up that you shouldn't bother purchasing hard media (or even digital rights) if you can download something for free. Which is where this blog really comes into fruition.… Continue

20081220 The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

I just got back from seeing the film The Day the Earth Stood Still and I'm here to tell you not to waste your money, unless you're an avid MST3Ker. The premise is awesome, I was hoping for a decent remake of the 1951 version by the same title. I was, however, mistaken. From the very outset it is a movie filled with product placements and dialog just begging to be picked apart. Jacob, the main character's step-son in this crisis of a crisis movie is begging the entire time for a quick res… Continue

20081215(16) eeePC 2G Surf (700)

I wound up getting off of work around 0130 last night. Pretty early night at least for this detachment so far. In case I haven't mentioned it, I'm in Fallon Nevada with my squadron doing Air Combat Maneuverability training with several other squadron of different types. Any who, got home sometime after 0130 and changed out, cooked some Ramen, poured a drink, and sat down to relax, reading my book and listening to some tunes. About 40 minutes later I get a phone call, this is NEVER good, EVER in… Continue

**Laser Safety**

Laser safety, get some before you blind yourself. That said: I've been working on a laser spirograph for a couple of weeks (months now?), on and off, and not really getting anywhere with it. I made a control panel to just the rotation of the mirrors, made a mount for the motors/laser and even put it on a tripod so I could change its direction with a deft flick of the wrist. Yes, it is awesome, thank you! Anyway, tore all of that apart tonight in a fit of boredom. I can still mount it all back… Continue

As I sit... I contemplate a modest proposal...

As i sit here on my wonderful 8 hour watch, it occured to me to look at my surroundings. I'm in an eight foot by twelve foot room, with a refrigerator, telephone, laptop computer, speakers, various keys and log-books, a small heater and a couple of chairs. Then it dawns on me that almost all of these items have at least one thing in common: warning labels. I propose, we remove these labels, as we see them on a day to day basis. I only mean the warning labels that pertain to a common sense scenar… Continue

It's not broken, 'til it's smokin'...

I got my "seen better days" Kodak EasyShare camera in the mail today finally. Thank the US Postal service for their wonderful services there, only took an extra 3 days and 4 dollars to get it to me now, because the box it came in was a re-used Priority Box with brown packing paper on it. Either way, got the camera, powered it on, took some quick snapshots around the room, and proceeded to dismantle like it's cool. The camera came with a broken back LCD Panel, so the only option for viewing phot… Continue

240 Gigabytes?

Okay, I'm not going to go full monty on this guy, it would be much too cost prohibitive, but I do think I'll be replacing the hard disk in my Toshiba Gigabeat here very soon. You can get 1.8 inch hard disk drives in both PATA and SATA flavours for pretty cheap now. It was rather surprising to me, don't know that it would be of much use to anybody really, but the idea of being able to upgrade the… Continue

All I want for Christmas

Yeah, the guy that doesn't even do the christmas thing has something he's ALWAYS wanted for christmas... Since I was a frigging child I've always loved the idea of one day walking down the street and wearing my computer and seeing what's stored in its video ram. WAY back when, that was a hard thing to imagine one day having, but I imagined it all the same. I remember holding camcorders and looking through the little view finders and wondering if I could one day use it to some relevant purpose b… Continue

|God| = Zero

Excerpt from episode fifteen of Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex "Maybe, just maybe, its something that's akin to the concept of the number zero. In other words, a symbol that rejects the lack of meaning that is necessary in order to designate the system as such. The symbol's analog version is God, whereas the digital version is zero. What do you think? And then if you think about it, our (Tachikoma) primary struc… Continue

Ergo Proxy

I'll try to leave the spoilers out, but there might be a few! I just finished the 23rd and final episode of Ergo Proxy. I've heard some people saying there might be a season two, that would be sweet. It could certainly go in that direction, but it was released on DVD in Japan nearly 2 years ago now, so I doubt they're going to bother. In total, the series was fantastic, rolling cyber-punk, steam-punk, and fantasy worlds all into one. Some of the plot devices and scenes were reminiscent of Neon… Continue

Quarantine

Just got back from the Movies, and while I agree with Tedescucci that movies are getting to be exorbitantly priced for what you get in entertainment value nowadays, I do recommend the movie Quarantine. It's a different take on the zombie movie. Still has some of the main themes of any zombie flick, playing characters' emotions off of one another, whole-sale carnage, and the underlying theme of the degradation of society. The previews for this flick were garbage and I was hoping for not mu… Continue

New Monitors!

Talking to my mum about the new 22" monitor she got (she's a geek too!) just the other day got me to thinking, maybe it was time for me to replace mine, or at least upgrade my existing set-up. Prior to going out and spending 449.00 US Dollars tonight, I had an HP f1905 19" 4:3 screen with a minuscule 17" no namer to the right of it. The idea was, to put the 19" in between the two 22" monitors, after-all, I prefer 4:3 over 16:9. Yeah, my desk is not NEAR big enough, should have splurged a little… Continue

Work Bench

We all take things for granted from time to time, well, I'll never take the use of a work-bench for granted again. Living in the barracks I lack one, hell, don't even have room for one if I had one. Anyway, right now I'm working on a laser Spirograph and doing most of the work on the floor of my room, tell you what, my knees and lower back are KILLING me. So far, I have the control box built (at least the panel portion) and I'… Continue
