Daniel What I think of onlive

I think Onlive is going to be a great service I love to play games, but I also love physical media being able to touch something and look at it. This is why I would rather have a physical disk, rather than to have digital content. I also feel this way about steam and other downloadable game services, but the reason that I have an open mind about Onlive is because it is streaming media. I'm already signed up for the beta program and would love to own it if it is cheap enough. I own a PlayStation… Continue

Etienne Savard Drupal on Rails : A match made in heaven

Drupal is a great CMS. Rails is a great web development platform. I really like Ruby for its simplicity and it's no nonsense syntax. I also like Rails for it's programming shortcuts that let you have easily access to all Web 2.0 goodness without the headaches. But, sometimes, I don… Continue

James Hill Buying domain names: Just bought mine.

I think I will join website owners on Geeks now it is official… Today will be known by the day A Geeks Opinion went pro. So what will be the plan for me now? I am aiming to get 800 views a day. I know this will come slowly but I am aiming high. The plan now is to write reviews on open source software, freeware and discuss general idea’s and tech. I am hoping to move onto hardware reviews in the future. But time will tell. Take everyone, James Hill Latest review:Continue

Jorge My list of open source software

So as any geek, I'm a fan of free and open source software, so I wanted to make a list of good, USEFUL, free and/or open source software, and hopefully have others add stuff that I might not be aware of. I mostly use windows, but I'll try to add plenty of multiplatform software. In My list: - Firefox (web browser) - Thunderbird (Mail application) - Sunbird (Calendar application) - Other Mozilla software - Opera (web browser) - Chrome (web browser) - Safari (web browser) - flock (web browser) -… Continue

Sirio Balmelli FreeCiv - are we really that civilized?

I recall when I started gaming on my Pentium 133 laptop, just when Blizzard's Diablo was hitting the shelves. Oh, MAN what a game! I was hooked. Warcraft II was also out and I remember the hours I used to spend wasting away in front of the computer. It got to be too much. Round about the time I convinced my mother to buy me a $5000.00 Dell workstation for Christmas (with the world-legendary Pentium 4 (!) inside) to play Starcraft with, I was spending hours every day just clicking away, drones,… Continue

Kitty Open vs. Closed Source Development

I'm not going to sit around all day beleaguering talking points. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, myths, etc. My questions lie more in the fact that we seem to be dead set on forcing one or the other down everyone else's throats. Open Source development by its very nature is a good idea. It allows a bunch of people to test and report bugs on software, and even fix it and submit fixes if they see fit. The downside to this is it's a lot like the chokepoint in communism, you can't really… Continue

freewarefiend Keepass

I like to add a favorite freeware app (or prog) to my lame blog here on Geeks, and the latest addition to this endeavor is Keepass. KeePass is a free open source password manager, and in my opinion a must have app. You can install it OR run it as a portable app (which I religiously do).

shellyelliot Why Use Drupal?

I just got back from DrupalCon 2009, which is a tech conference for people who use Drupal (an Open Source Content Management System). My site, BreakTheMatrix, is built using Drupal, so I wanted to see what cool things people are doing in the realm of Open Source development. I wasn't disappointed! Thanks for watching, and as always, please pass along, rate, stumble, favorite, etc. if you like it! Resources: http://drupal.org… Continue

Naomi Most Investigating CMS / social networking frameworks for Linux...

I'm about to dive headfirst into creating a social network intended for a relatively small group (about 300 people). It will be focused on sharing information, photos, videos, and collaborations between studios in the artist / hacker community I am a part of. What seems to be very much wanted is for every user to get their own subdomain, e.g. nthmost.oaklandart.net, and I envision that each person's "realm" will be both self-contained (so they can bring in lots of web traffic OR stay relatively… Continue

Cameron I never thought I would become addicted to Ubuntu

Wow. It's been many years since I first gave Ubuntu a whirl, and I'm sincerely glad I did. Lately, I've been using Evolution (instead of Thunderbird), which allows me the ability to sync things easily with my Treo 680. All my ToDo's, memos, appointments (classes for me), and contacts are synced up perfectly. It's really a dream come true, since I can have it simply transfer everything easily. Games are not much of a concern for me anymore. I never was really avid about any PC game I played, ex… Continue

Jawnson Ubuntu Hat and Mouse Pad - HD

Please visit http://jawnson.com/ for related articles and tech news.

A few weeks ago, I bought a couple of things from http://shop.ubuntu.com/ and want to show you how they look. The hat is made out of organic cotton and costs about nine dollars. It comes in two colors, one of which is organic, and employs a buckle style fit-strap. The mouse pad is either made from plastic, imitation plastic, or plastic like material and costs ap… Continue

kyle Fire Safety

Though fire can be very safe if treated correctly, carelessness, irresponsibility or lack of knowledge when dealing with fire can lead to disastrous results. Location The location of your fire is a very important, and often overlooked, aspect of fire safety. There are two main considerations: * Whether the fire will catch light to or damage anything else * Whether the fire is dangerous for people nearby. Do not light a fire in a place near to people that are engaged in an acti… Continue

Matt S. Thoughts on Open Source and it's Future

For those users who are relatively new computer users or who have no issues with the way the computer is out of the box, living without open source is no problem. Honestly, this category spreads over most of the Apple community, because for the most part, people are satisfied with the way things work. Why is this? Well, because they just do. After all, as the motto goes, "It just works." For the most part, open source is the Antichrist of Apple, mainly because they try to prevent any means of OS… Continue

Daverix the social web

thesocalweb.tv is a great show that's discussing the social web. Discussing different cool technologies as OpenID, OpenSocial and they talk a lot of the Open Stack which is a combination of OpenID, OpenSocial and many other techniques. The show usually airs every week. I have requested to start a group with the title "Socal Web" so well see if it gets accepted. I think OpenID should be used on geeks.pirillo.com but I don't know how much control chris or the people who maintains the site have.… Continue
