Hello everyone, this posts is my first one in ages so bare with me as I try and get my skill back.
Okay, the start of the story goes something like this. I got a virus I had to format my beloved hard disk and I could not be bothered to install windows again and put up with its crap all over again, even though windows 7 is a dream. But anyway, I installed Ubuntu's latest and greatest instalment, version 9.10 and I have to say well done, like seriously. I love it.... So far. To install programs a…

For the past 2 years or so, I have been lucky enough to manage my own servers. Throughout this time, I have been able to use quite a variety of operating system’s including Debian (my favorite), Ubuntu, Gentoo, Red Had, FreeBSD and CentOS. Now, CentOS is the very first OS that I ran as a server, and I have to admit, It is not all that great to use like Debian is. However, I can tell you that it is the most secure and stable operating system I have used. Where it may sometimes be a big pain, It h…

I've somehow decided that I want to get ArchLinux on my laptop. XD
I Dont know how I come up with this stuff, but I've never had a text based installer before. Doesn't look too difficult.
Any Suggestions, Tips, Ect.
I want to try to put ArchLinux On my home computer, but am debating. Since Games Like warcraft and Starcraft 2 are not made for linux, I am having trouble deciding weather I should try it or not. I'd hate for Starcraft 2 to get shipped to me and for me to install it and for it to…

WOOT! I'm over achieving. I am installing Mandriva on my laptop, a distro of linux. Anyone know any REALLY COOL Linux Distro's?
Any recommendations for someone just putting their toes into the Linux pool?
I've tried Ubuntu and loved it, I just want to keep trying different stuff before I settle on it. Waiting for uTorrent to finish downloading the ISO.

While everyone is so excited about the release of Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 7, an RC for another operating system was released which deserves our attention. It’s the Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala release candidate (RC) which is available for download here. If you already have Ubuntu 9.04 installed…

About a week or 2 ago, I opened a new site called Geeky Tutorials. Just like the name says, it is a site that has tutorials about geeky like things. So far we have under 12 posts, and it is just me and my friend John writing for it now. We have an average of 30 unique visitors per day, which isn’t terrible for a site that just opened. As of now, I have written tutorials on mostly Linux stuff and my friend, John, wrote a tutorial on batch. Anyone can become an author, as long as you have knowledg…

Ah Linux, a very powerful yet weak Operating System. I have been using Linux (mainly Ubuntu) for years now. But in May of 2009 I dove into a 100% Linux world. I had reformatted my hard drive and only had Linux Ubuntu 9.04 installed on the system (64-bit). Things were going great in the wonderful world of Linux. Then of course I ran into some bugs, but also some software compatibility with programs and lack there of. Linux had turned into an obsession for me to use as a main OS. It was a wonderfu…

Hey all,
Just browsing through some old hard drives I've had kicking around and ran across photos of a build I did a few years back- thought it might be interesting to see...
I'd had this antique silverware box for a long time- can't recall where I got it from, probably a flea market or garage sale. I have a soft spot for things like this- buy it, put it away, remember I have it, try to think of a use, then put it away again- lol.
At any rate, I'd been reading (at the time) about the mini-itx…

Is Linux Ready For Prime Time?

I my 40 some years I have witnessed and used many PC operating systems. Some of these have been from almost the beginning of time (computing) itself (man am I old). I have used almost all OS flavors at one time or another since the start of the PC revolution. My son, now 15, often wonders how we could survive without a computer as he has never know life without one. In any case most of the o…

In the video below I am going to show you how to make a web server on an old linux box. The only prerequisite is that you know a little about CLI interfaces and you can learn new things quickly. In this tutorial I am going to show you how to make a linux web server using Arch Linux and XAMPP. Please note that XAMPP is not meant for commercial use and may not be as secure as you would like. However if you follow the steps in order to secure the server you should be fairly safe. So watch the video…

Ok so heres my opinion on gentoo.
I had a lot of expirience with it but ill try to keep it simple and short.
By the time i've started linux i did consider my self a geek, because linux was like "whoah" something i never tried. After messing around with Ubuntu i've moved around different distros in search for my "perfect one" and then i've heard about gentoo. To be honest after i've read installation manual i've putted away my gentoo minimal install ( since i wanted to be uber geek ) for good cou…

Matthew Szulik, Red Hat's former CEO and current chairman, has been in semi-retirement for the past two years, but you'd never know it from listening to his interview with the BBC's Peter Day. Szulik, ever the revolutionary, talks up open source's opportunity to disrupt conventional software and promote social reform.
As he does so, however, he inadvertently describes Red Hat's winning…
