David Myers NexStar CX HDD Caddy

I've had a spare 2.5" hard drive laying around for a while and I've been wondering what to do with it. It's a 200GB Sata 5200rpm drive; Big enough to be useful, but what for? Then someone gave me the Idea of putting it into a USB Caddy so I can carry it around with me. Now I already have one of these; a WD 500GB Passport, but you can't ever have too much space! So I went ahead and ordered on NexStar CX, made b… Continue

Philip Do Laptop Help

Hey Guys, i need your advice for a mediocre tech geek who's looking to buy a fast and affordable laptop. Any suggestions? Right now, I'm looking at a Sony Vaio CS VGN390. What are your thoughts on Sony Vaio's? I was intending on buying an SSD for my laptop but i don't know if i can add it to my lapop and still keep my HDD. Plus, i don't know how to. And i might get an SSD for my desktop too and i have a lot of files on my HDD already and i was wondering if Adding an SSD would alter my HDD in any… Continue

medinamatt Defrag Programs. Useful Now, But For How Long?

The only reason I pose this question is SSD's are an emerging technology, and I belive they will be standard in about 5-10 years. For those of you that don't know what a SSD is, I will tell you. SSD stands for Solid State Disk. Solid state means that there are no moving parts, like in a tradtional HDD. This means that files don't fragment the HDD. Fragging/Defragging is sort of difficult to explain, so I'll put it this way. Think of your HDD as a dictonary, and when you save a file to the HDD, i… Continue

medinamatt Quite Possibly My Most Exciting Day Of 2009.

Yesterday, 5/24/09, was possibly my best day of 2009 yet. As it's may, the school year is winding down, with about a few weeks left until school is over. My older sister is graduating high school, and going to Shippensburg University with an undeclared major. If you are a follower of mine on twitter (@matthewmedina25) you more than likely read that I was going to Target to get my brother an SD card for his camera. We got that, and after waiting an hour for some photo's to develop, my mom asked m… Continue

First off, I want to say HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all you moms and moms-to-be. I helped my mom in the garden with my friend Cale, who brought over his laptop. We then decided to get on it b/c i told him of dual monitors and he wanted to try it out. Well, needless to say, his laptop was slow as heck. Here are some specs: Pentium M 1.6 GHz 512 MB RAM 50 GB HDD XP media center edition sp2 He told me it has been slow for a while. He proceeded to play on my desktop with Windows 7 while i went to fix… Continue

pwn247 Increase the Life of your Mac Hard Drive

After buying a new Maxtor 500GB hard drive for my Mac Pro, it reminded me of all the little things that we can do to keep the drive spinning, reading, and writing as long as it can. This applies to- not only the Mac Pro- but even your MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini, and so on. PC users can also benefit! Keep her spinning: Many people believe that hard drives that are continuously spinning will wear down over time. And while this is true in a sense, it's not quite as wearing as the latter. Havin… Continue

Andrew Troubleshooting Hardware Failures

Your all pumped up to play some Call of Duty after a hard days work, and you go to turn on your computer and you get a black screen. Your monitor won't display an image and you can't get into your BIOS. How to you determine which part of your computer has failed? To be able to determine the solution, you first have to understand the problem. For example, a blank image doesn't mean that there is something wrong with your computer, you could be having monitor issues. The process of elimination is… Continue

Marshall I really rather dislike either G4 processors, or USB.

About a year ago myself an my mum (mom to my American brethren) chipped together and bought a 500gb external HDD so that my Desktop PC (running Windows at the time) could encompass the enormity of our combined iTunes. As you can see from my specs, both machines I own have puny HDDs, so to store the many films/tv shows we converted from dvd, and my 20 gigabytes of nasty heavy metal music (as well as my mum's rather pathetic 5 gigabytes of pop/rock) an external drive of immense capacity was requir… Continue

Justin Yes, There is a difference between Memory and Hard Disk space...

Now, this is prertty much obvious to many people, and if you’re reading this blog it is probably obvious to you as well, but I’m sure many people also know that they have friends who will incorrectly refer to their computer’s hard disk space. A common example… Friend: “My computer isn’t fast enough, how do I make it faster?” Me: “How much memory do you have?” Friend: “250 g bytes” Me: “What?” Friend: “My computer came with 250GB” Me: “No, not your hard drive space, your RAM.” Friend: “My What?”… Continue
