Sorry, but removing the checkmark from the "sleep" option doesn't work for me, with OSX Tiger. I have a couple Fantom 500 GB hard drives. Anytime I want to access them, they have to spin up first.

After buying a new Maxtor 500GB hard drive for my Mac Pro, it reminded me of all the little things that we can do to keep the drive spinning, reading, and writing as long as it can. This applies to- not only the Mac Pro- but even your MacBook, iMac,…

Increase the Life of your Mac Hard Drive

After buying a new Maxtor 500GB hard drive for my Mac Pro, it reminded me of all the little things that we can do to keep the drive spinning, reading, and writing as long as it can. This applies to- not only the Mac Pro- but even your MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini, and so on. PC users can also benefit!

Keep her spinning:
Many people believe that hard drives that are continuously spinning will wear down over time. And while this is true in a sense, it's not quite as wearing as the latter. Havin… Continue

Barack: Out with the old... PCs!

Upon moving into the White House, Obama's team of multimedia and technical know-hows were in for a surprise when they discovered that their new "home" is less than technically inclined. Running Windows XP- a nearly 7 year old operating system, on even older computers held together the mainframe of our presiden't new home. The Bush administration left out-of-date Microsoft software on our underpowered systems, and few laptops could be found. In fact, the team couldn't figure out how to do simple… Continue

Circuit City goes broke; Where are the deals?

With word of Circuit City closing all of it's stores, liquidating all of the merchandise, I decided to drop by my local shop to check out the big bargains. Think again.

HDTVs were no cheaper than they were before, CDs/DVDs were only discounted a buck or so, computer monitors were still way overpriced ($249 for a no-name brand 20-inch !?), and notebook computers were the same way.

It sucks that my only local electronics retailer is bankrupt, and at the same time they've got no bargain-basement… Continue

How Much Space Do You Need?

With 1.5TB drives on the market, many users actually wonder how much space do I need? With more and more HD content streaming from home camcorders, file sizes getting larger and holding more fun stuff, and computer games being longer and having higher resolution images, things are getting bigger. But does that mean you're in the market for a new hard drive? Let's find out.

First, let's look at file sizes.

There are 1,000KB in 1MB.
There are 1,000MB in 1GB.

Windows 7 Public Beta

What happens when you release a service pack for Vista but brand it as a new OS? Well Microsoft is trying to pull a big one on the consumer market with the release of the Windows 7 public beta. Users will immediately recognize that the OS has been "slimmed down", now using much less system resources, and will also notice a new and improved "dock-like" taskbar. In fact, the new taskbar is so "dock-like", it makes me wonder if Apple will look into filing a legal claim.

However, with these changes… Continue
