yeah that looks pretty good, but I wouldn't wash out the color by making the light color bright white. It just hurts the eyes when there's color and suddenly the light is so intense, it's like looking at the sun or something.

Only if the gradient is very subtle and not an extreme change in colors, just look at the buttons on apple's website. Another example are the Adobe CS 3 and 4 icons, they have a barely there gradient.
