photography ! need computer skills to be complete. lost over 6000 photos when I erased photos on ipod and it also took great photos off my desk top. Trying to recover them but it states unreconizable format. What the heck do i now to change the format?

trying to recover lost photos

i lost over 6000 photos from my mac computer. i was erasing photos from my ipod and when i erased deleted them from my ipod they also deleted on my computer. i think the norton antivirus quarantined them. i recently recovered i hope to be photos but when i tried to view them i had an error that stated (file is an unrecognized format) what do i do to fix the problem and recover the photos? can anyone offer some advice!
