For real basic documents, try Abiword (freeware). I never do anything more complicated than a personal letter, and Abiword will even save to and open MS Word docs.

I wasn't "telling" you what to do, just offering a suggestion. What ever your choice, please consider becoming a part of the solution, as opposed to part of the problem. Adoption attorneys are great in my opinion (as opposed to "ambulance chasers").
