That is a hard question to answer. Ubuntu and it's derivatives (Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, etc.) are the most popular. Ubuntu will not play DVDs or MP3s and other non-open formats out of the box. I am told that Linux Mint is a good choice. Look for reviews, maybe on youtube, and try different ones until you find one you like.
yeah, I was the same. But 3 moths ago I got a MacBook Pro because I loved the iPhone experience. Luckily my friend owns a Mac shop and I got one slightly cheaper. I got the MacBook Pro over the MacBook because the Pro can handle Vista much better, for Vista needs a good graphics card.
I have not yet installed vista, and I definitely don't want to. I have a custom built fully loaded PC for windows.
I felt the same way about the OS, I knew Windows (and still do) really well. If I wanted to change something, I knew exactly where the file was in the windows folder. I was so used to it, I had used it all my life.
But the switch to mac was incredibly easy. Unlike 5 years ago, now most applications run on Mac as well as Windows. The filesystem is much cleaner, being based on BSD. It makes more sense. There is no installing applications, you just drag the app into the "Applications" folder and there it is.
Everything on a mac is easier. And now I am learning to develop for mac, and it makes more sense than any windows thing.
I am not one of those Mac people that hates windows and Vista, I use both. But I definitely prefer the Mac. There are barely any errors (sometimes I get them like once a week). It's faster than windows is on the same hardware. Everything seems better and more advanced.
I suggest waiting until october 14 and get one of the new MacBook Pros. They are gonna be really nice ;)
