I noticed a little while ago that my friend Mark Horvath mentioned that he somehow lost a day, and it’s now Thursday. Well, let’s correct that. Since it’s well after midnight now, it’s actually Friday already! How the heck did that happen? I swear the week just started. You’re telling me it’s over already?!
I know I didn’t accomplish everything I set out to get done this week. Did you? How does the time slip away so fast during this time of year? The holidays are creeping in closer and faster, and I’m not ready yet! I haven’t hung my stocking. I haven’t finished decorating my house. I haven’t baked cookies for Santa yet!!! How am I supposed to get any work done with all of these uber-important things hanging over me? Heck – let’s not even TALK about shopping for presents!
I ran into my old friend Dave McClure down in Hawaii recently, when we both attended the [re]Think Hawaii conference. Dave and I go way back – all the way to Gnomedex 2 in Iowa! Back then, he was working for PayPal in the Marketing department. These days, he has money that he’s just waiting to give to you! He’s a Venture Capitalist in the Silicon Valley.
Dave started doing angel investing a little when he left PayPal. He was working with some small companies, but started last year doing nothing more than investing money for others into companies and startups. This is what he does full time now, for places like Founder’s Fund.
When looking for someone to invest in, Dave says that he doesn’t invest much in ideas. There’s so many people who have already built websites. You don’t need to look at an idea… you can see what they’re already doing. He looks for people with good marketing and design skills – people who have a vision. He also looks for people who are doing something that are on the straight-and-narrow, such as productivity and home things. He likes to know that his investments are going to be things that are going to sell.
Dave chose to visit [re]Think Hawaii for the same reason the rest of us did – the food! Seriously, though, Dave wanted to be able to hang out and get ideas from people who hail from all walks of life. This conference merges people from every aspect of social media and technology that you can think of, and it’s an amazing way to get new perspectives on things.

Jack sent in an excellent list of the things we should be sure to do if we are ever in London. I’ll be in Paris next week, you know. I hear London is only a “hop, skip and jump” from there! However, I doubt I’ll have time to make it over during this trip, since I’m there for a conference. Hopefully, I’ll have a chance to visit one day!
Big Ben – A great sight to see, possibly the most famous clock in the world and part of the Palace of Westminster. It really is something worth seeing. Tours of Big Ben are also run during summer months for those who would like to see more of it.
London Eye – From here, you’ll see a large amount of London from high up. A truly great experience that is something for all to enjoy. Private capsules are available to hire.
Tower of London – The Tower of London remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. Complete with tales of historical drama, infamous Beefeaters, the Crown Jewels and the Royal Armouries, a visit to the Tower is a must for all visitors to London.
Buckingham Palace – This is the Queen’s official residence. The State Rooms of the Palace are open to visitors during the Annual Summer Opening in August and September.
Trafalgar Square – How could you miss one of the capital’s most iconic areas? Come and marvel at Nelson’s Column and the four huge lion statues. Feeding the pigeons is now discouraged (due to the spread of diseases) so please don’t bring them any treats. On the north side of the square, you can visit the National Gallery. Just around the corner on St. Martin’s Lane is the National Portrait Gallery. Both have both permanent displays and special exhibitions, so check what’s on before you go.
Tate Modern – The Tate Modern is situated within a converted power station and has an imposing position opposite St. Paul’s Cathedral along the River Thames. You can visit again and again as it’s free and the modern art displays change quite frequently. You’ll often find enormous ‘installations’ in the Turbine Hall on the ground floor. Right outside is the Millennium Bridge (the one that was ‘wobbly’ when it first opened). Don’t forget Tate Britain – you can take the Tate Boat between the two Tates and the London Eye.
Houses of Parliament – The Houses of Parliament is only a short walk down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square. The building is stunning from Parliament Square, but it is worth taking a walk over Westminster Bridge and getting the view from the South Bank. Big Ben is actually the name of the bell in the clock tower which chimes every 15 minutes. Tours inside the Houses of Parliament for overseas visitors are only available during August and September.
Natural History Museum – Known for its underfed Dinosaur at its entrance, the Natural History Museum itself is large and quite impressive. Have a good look at the columns and floors for the detail > contained within their architecture. Some of the exhibits may cost more, such as the Antarctic experience, but it’s worth it on a hot day. You could easily spend more than a day in the Natural History Museum (Antarctic is pretty big :-) ) but fear not, the museum is spilt into different zones so you can focus on what you want to see most and come back for anything you miss.
Westminster Abbey – For many, this was the place to be seen, dead of course. Where as most of us keep our skeletons in the cupboard, Westminster Abbey keeps its bodies buried under the floor. The impressive list of dead people is only matched by the architecture. Westminster Abbey just oozes of the royal dead. Go out back behind the Abbey to the courtyard and take in the views. You can sit on benches or lie in the grass and relax for a while. You will not be disappointed be this amazing place.
Windsor Castle – Located just outside of London, Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It has been the official residence of the British sovereign for over 900 years and the amazing State Apartments are a favourite with London tourists.
How about you? What’s cool to see and do where you’re from?

If you’re not following Mike Butcher on Twitter, you’re missing out! He writes for TechCrunch – but only for a specific part! Mike and I ran into each other at the [re]Think Hawaii conference recently, and had to talk about social media, and his take on things.
As I mentioned, Mike writes for TechCrunch. He started out writing only for TechCrunch UK, and has turned that into a gig writing for all of Europe and the surrounding areas. In Europe, Asia, and the like, everyone is spread out. Mike and his team work hard to bridge that gap, and bring you the latest news and information from everyone “across the pond”. They now have a total of 16 writers on board!
I asked Mike how he got his start in social media, or what drew him to it. He’s been writing about the Internet for many years, including for a magazine awhile back in London. He also worked for the American magazine Industry Standard quite awhile ago. After this, he began doing some freelance writing, and met Mike Arrington in London. He started talking with him, forged a relationsihp, and bam! Mike was off and running, writing for TechCrunch London.
For Mike, the Internet IS the office. That’s where he works, and where he lives. He feels that this is the new way of “doing journalism”. I have to agree with that, obviously!
He was drawn to the [re]Think Hawaii conference for several reasons. This conference had people from the US, China, and even Europe. It brought together a number of different personalities from all walks of life, and from every corner of social media and technology you can think of.
If you happen to run into Mike at a conference, take the time to talk with him. He’s a great guy, with excellent insights on the state of social media in Europe! Be sure you follow him on Twitter, as well.

Hey guys alex here,
I just wanted to thank you all for still looking at my forums/blogs! It means a lot and shows that going on this website is never a waste of time. I have been working very hard in school and I have just started working at Walmart! I am glad that I finally have a job again, that way i will have money to buy things and save up for a car.
For Christmas I am getting a Toshiba Laptop with windows vista! It should be nice to go back to windows after 2 years of Ubuntu. I do plan on… Continue
Today is going to be so much fun due to 3 things i will be doing today:
1. Getting a hair cut so that i can look good.
2. I am going to be doing some driving which is always fun.
3. I am loosing some weight which is amazing because i was always a little big.
The reason that i have been gone for so long is due to my education in high school! I have been doing so well that i just couldn't get away from it. I am able to get on today because i had a whole bunch of tests so now i don't have homework for a day or two! Anyway i am just on here to do a little bit of some updates and things like that. Stop by and leave a comment! I'd love to read them!
Is going to be very good. I am going to spend sometime on my computer and then later today go driving some places and then hang out with some people that i haven't in a very long time. As for tomorrow doing some more computer stuff in the morning then hanging and driving and then homework :[. Oh well this weekend is going to be good!!!
Cheers
Alex.
my main mail runs over a german provider (1&1) but I hardly never use their web front end as the mails are pushed to my blackberry and all my machines connect to it via IMAP.
But I also use Yahoo!, Hotmail and GMail. Web-Interface wise GMail is b...
I use Gmail strictly from the Web Site. I also use AOL with Yahoo forwarding to my AOL. I also use my POP3 Email that was given to me from my ISP. So, I have 5 main Email addresses (probably more that I don't use).
I like the brick wall in the background. But I would use a white font or different color. Unless the goal is to make it not be seen as easily oh yeah and make the font a little bigger. Sorry if this is upsetting :P
