Accidental War Driving

Seems like everyone has their own wireless network. We were driving home from the restaurant and I'm on my netbook and I happen to look at the wireless networks that are available as we're driving. So many! I really am surprised at the number of wireless, home networks.

First , so many just don't get away from default settings. This is just not secure! So many networks named LINKSYS or 2WIRE... And an amazing number of unsecured networks! You're lucky I need to park on your street for any amoun… Continue

A Big Meanie

OK, I was talking about the firewall thing with dear husband and he said I was being a Dragon Lady. So I loosen up the settings at bit. I hope this doesn't bite me in the ass later.

Stop Whining

Our eningeers came and installed a new firewall at the job. Actually, there really wasn't a a firewall before, just the default software that came with the cable modem router. Naturally, the new Sonicwall router allows for a lot more refined filtering. So now my co-workers are calling me because they no longer have access to their coupon sites and their real estate sites and their dating sites and whining to me "well, can't you just give me back that site?" Yea, I could. But this whining annoys… Continue

Two Types of Computer Professional

Someone was telling me that there are 2 types of computer professional:
1) one who does not even look at a computer when he goes home, and
2) one who has a several networked computers, a one that's open and currently being worked on and a list of computer projects.

Frankly, I just don't understand the first type, but whatever.

No, I Will Not Fix Your Computer For Free

I saw this written on a t-shirt during an episode of Chuck: No, I Will Not Fix Your Computer For Free. I LOVE that shirt. My geek-husband fell over laughing when he saw it and insisted I get one. He knows I am consistently pressed with requests to fix someone's computer.

And I really want one, but not sure where I would wear it. It wouldn't go over well at family gatherings. I mean I HAVE to fix Grandma's laptop--she's helped me so much over the years. And Dad, well, he's my Dad. And little sis… Continue

I guess I do not understand how a workplace can be a "social network" and a place to to all your 'home' business'. Whatever happened to just plain old "work"? Then we wonder why companies are folding and our economy is in trouble. I don't get this.…

Yes, exactly Paul!! And the other thing I found out was that the firewall got all these heavy restrictions in the first place because of people who were downloading porn and how were working on their private projects so tough that it was obvious to…

It's their own fault, they shouldn't have gone to those sites or downloaded that software in the first place. If they want their computers and network to run properly they should learn how to use a computer and fix it, keep it running etc themselves!

You all are so my people! And I like what you said PC Geek Kate--very true. Myself, we've got 3 PCs and 3 laptops with various versions of Windows and Linux in various rooms networked on a Windows 2003 server, plus the neighbor I set up to use the w…

I will say that i'm definitely the 2nd type. Besides my desktop for my everyday stuff I've got my HTPC on my 46" sanyo, as well as my old Dell p4 in my street fighter 2 cab I gutted and converted to MAME. I'm definitely in it because I like to do it.

The joys of parenting! I can't wait. Should be fun. I should just ask my mom about the Joys of Parenting and see what she has to say...

I felt the book (Memoirs of a Geisha) was just a little too bloated. It was good, very good. I read it in under a week, a book has to be good if I zip through it that fast. But I felt it was really just too much and the movie trimmed it down to a perfect level while still retaining a good deal of what was in the book.
