linux screen resolution

hi geeks!
i have just taken my first baby step into ubuntu. now i am very inexperienced with this and i noticed that my screen resolution is 600x800 and wont go any higher. i am just running ubuntu directly off the disc. will this problem go away if i actually install it on my hd? or can i find drivers for my nvidia graphics card for linux? or does linux even use drivers?

thanks :D
