I think I'm going to add the 8 gigs of DDR2 (667 MHz) and give the 4870 a go. Thanks for the advice everyone

the 4870 is officially supported by apple, in the new mac pro at least...so driver are not the problem, are already included in the last update of the OS. and even the 4890 could work with some tweak. the problem as you said may be just the mobo...d…

i would attempt both parts, but confirm that your motherboard supports more than 4 gigs more ram is good, whereas more ram and more graphics power is even better
