Could be the sound chip just went bad. One thing you could try, remove the sound drivers in the system control panel, restart, it should find them automatically and reinstall them. Also, check the manufacturers website for updated drivers.
Ok so heres the deal, for some reason i switched my laptop on today (windows xp) and all the sound sounds distorted and terrible (like a really low bit rate mp3) unless i open adobe audition and run that in the background.
Anyone any ideas?

Install a driver through CLI and then maualy config you Xorg.conf file. It's good fun. To be honest, I can't see what you have against using ubuntu or some other easier OS. *Smacks head* I forgot, getting what you want is the way of the linux/GNU. XD
Well to be honest I know almost nothing about CentOS, but I'm sure there are other people out there that don't have CD drives but want CentOS. And why do you need that partucular CD drive? Your problem with X is almost certainly xorg.conf needing reconfiguring and new drivers being needed. There are plenty of great auto configs for that (/usr/bin/nvidia-settings springs for mind if you have the nvidia proprietry drivers. Tell me more xD
