I get what you're saying. We just don't have anything to prove it with so we say that to support life, there NEEDS to be air, water, etc.

Agreed. Now please, someone refresh my memory on that equation that Determines the odds of intellegent life existing ( other than earth)... A youtube link with Carl Sagan explaining it will gain bonus kudos!!

Whate, you mean sort of like the "life" computer sim?? Has a little merit, I suppose, However, the galaxies are all receeding from each other at pretty much the same rate.. if it were motion from stardeaths, then each galaxy would be moving at diffe…

How do you account for the red shifts we see if they're not moving away?

Ravneet added a discussion to the group Astronomy Geeks
Scientists say that the universe is expanding (because the planets are moving away from each other),but it's point of expansion is not known.I think that the planets are occupying the empty space created by the death of stars(after which they come i…

Red shifts occur when you view something moving away from you at high speeds. The faster the object (in the case of the discussion, stars) are moving, the more toward the red spectrum their visible light is shifted. This is due to the net speed at which the light is traveling. Since the light begins travel at the uniform speed it travels in a vacuum (~186,000 mi/sec...a.k.a. 'light speed') the increasing distance of the source of that light causes the wavelength of the light to appear shifted toward the red end of the spectrum.

There's a similar phenomenon known as blue shift caused by something moving toward the observer at high speeds.
