This is a group for any geeks who want to take control of their health, learn to eat better and to incorporate exercise into life. No harsh dieting, just changing life. We're here for support and tips, not judgment.

i suppose the ideal thing to do is to replace all the unhealthy things you eat with healthy things (as much as is tolerable to you) and then gradually start making yourself quit eating before you are 100% stuffed, which is not ideal anyway. of cou...

Profile Information

What kind of geek are you?
Writing, blogging, theology, technology, sociology, psychology, political, musical - I'm pan-geeky.
Why do you consider yourself a geek?
I love to learn about pretty much anything
How did you find out about our Geek community?
A fellow geek
What are your "geeky equipment" specs?
My primary geek tool is my MacBook (River): 2.16 GHz C2D/120GB HD/4GB RAM/Mac OS 10.5.5 (Leopard) and Ubuntu (Hardy Heron). Her name is River and she's my constant companion. Added to the computer arsenal are 2 Dell laptops (both nameless inspirons), a geriatric G4 tower named Deevd, an old iMac named Sidney. I'm rarely without my Product[RED] Nano (YoSaffBrig) or my purple shuffle (Kaylee). There is a firefly naming scheme going on with my current setup. I broke the theme, however, with my BlackBerry 8700c: Detective Wellington Clixby.

My digital camera is simple, but efficient: Canon PowerShot A550 (her name is Zoe). I'm not any good at photography, but it's interesting and I'm entertained by it.

My knitting arsenal consists of needles and yarns in every imaginable configuration (including my own handspun), but the gem of the group is my KnitPicks Options interchangeable set of nickel-plated brass circs. I adore those.

My spinning weaponry is simple enough: fiber from every fur-bearing critter and a few spindles, including my three favorites: Butterfly Girl Designs Flourite high-whorl 1.3 oz spindle, nameless bottom whorl 2.2 oz spindle for plying and my "little Meggie" mother Marion kick spindle.

But my biggest range of "equipment" is my personal library, which is vast, varied and much used by both myself and others.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Me. But older. Actually, I write and I'm content with that.
What makes you laugh?
My brother more than anyone in the universe and aside from him, my Family 2.0
What is the thing in life you treasure most?
My Family 2.0
What's the geekiest thing you've ever done?
Too many to count, including making a party out of going to the Mac OS 10.2 release.
What do you do to entertain yourself?
Synchronized Olympic Snarking
Favorite music, movies, books, shows, artists, games, people, events, hobbies, etc.?
I'll add this later, once I've revised the list.

NaNoWriMo Software Lineup (Novel Writing Software Reviews)

Yes, it's that time of year again, boys and girls, the time when all of we would-be writers put aside sanity for the sake of a 30 day dash to 50,000 words: National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). This is the marathon of novel-writing, to produce a readable 50,000 word story in a single month. Some of the truly crazy people have even begun fundraisingContinue

Epic F(l)ail!

So the economy is crap. Don't ask me what that means in the long run; I'm not financier. I'm not even very good at balancing my checkbook. However, I've got some theories, I have a laptop and I have a blog, so here goes:

George W. Bush, Jr. is a very, very bad president. He's lousy at it, in fact, but that's not the point. Bush is a lousy president, but he's a fantastic Viking!

Think about it: in the time of the Vikings, you had the head-of-the-league-boards, MVV (Most Valuable Viking) squads… Continue

MacBook: My Four Part Tragedy

In September of 07, it was time to upgrade from my 800MHz G3 iBook. I thought I'd avoided the problems by waiting for not the second but the third release of the model. (A dear friend had the MacBook Pro 1.0 and I learned a lot from his story.) She was beautiful! So gorgeous, in fact, that I named her Inara Serra, as I'd become enamored of the Firefly series a few months before.

Things were great for about three months. Then one morning, my MacBook failed to boot up. I tried all the tips and tr… Continue

Apple Update!

Yes, like always, they are getting mixed reviews -- but I'm lusting after an aluminum 13" MacBook like nobody's business.

Point 1: No mouse button. I adore that they've ditched the button. I have a year old MacBook and I never use my button. I have taps enabled and I use the gestures, so I almost never actually click the physical button.

Point 2: No FW port. I'm not upset about that either. Yes, target disk mode is out the window and that's sad. But in the 7 years I've been a loyal Mac user? I… Continue

I'm a geek in my Second Life, too!

I signed up yesterday for the infamous SL. No, it's not WoW -- but to me, that's a benefit. I don't want to be roaming around killing things and hunting orcs. Not my thing. No, I'm pretty much just in it to be a pretty pixelated princess with a fabulous wardrobe and the ability to fly all over creation. ^_^

Sadistic Crap Legitimized By Florid Prose

That's the quote that came to mind while watching almost every recent address of the McPain cyborg to the greater Republican party.

"Terrorist!"
"Ay-rab!"
"Traitor!"
and my personal unfavorite: "Kill him!"

... this is the "religious right"?

Don't get me wrong: I'm Christian (and unapologetically so), but I don't believe that any of this is Christian. (Actually, I believe Republicanism is, in many, many ways, very UNChristian, but that's a post for another time.)

I'm voting for Obama and I'm… Continue

Finally, a home for the geeks!

Geeks do tend to gravitate toward certain fora and I think that's why places like LJ are hyper-populated with geeks.

Anyhow, I'm enjoying the site quite a bit. The stupid has followed here, though, as well. I saw a place advertising Web hosting and a drawing for a MBP. That's all well and good, but when I visited the site, I knew immediately that I would not trust these people with my Web hosting.

First, the style is very 1997 "my first Web page." It's intensely… Continue

Boycotting the internet until the ignorance stops.11/5

Aww, c'mon! You can't do that! The ignorance never really stops. It's like holding your breath for world peace -- you'll pass out long before the world cleans up its act!
