Gifts for Him and Her is a post from Chris Pirillo

I gave you a chance to ask for what you wanted this holiday season. Hundreds of you responded, but only one of you… actually, TWO of you were given a gift. We’ll do this again next year, assuming our community continues to grow.
The first winner was Kari, who asked for a digital camera for her stepdad. Apparently, her camera was stolen somewhere on her college campus recently. So, her stepdad didn’t think twice, and gave his camera to her so she’d have one. Kari didn’t ask for something for herself. She asked for something for another person, which is why I chose her as a winner. Her video was very touching, and her intentions were very good.
The other winner is long-time community member Ron Knights. Ron asked for financial help to go visit his elderly parents for the holidays. I believe Ron himself lives clear up in Maine, and his parents are in Atlanta, Georgia. Living on a fixed income, it’s difficult for Ron to make the trip on his own. I’m more than happy to help out, so that they can spend some time together. Ron also posted a follow-up thank you video last night. That made his winning even more special for me!
I had a great time going through all of the videos. It was a tough choice, to be sure. Thank you to everyone who entered. I appreciate your support!

LEGO Games is a post from Chris Pirillo

Part of the geek experience is playing with LEGO. I took the bricks for granted, as some people (like Imei) have never played with them at all. This was her first time – caught on tape. Actually, it was caught on Memory Stick.
LEGO is serious business for most of us Geeks. We GET it, you know? You don’t need to have a set of directions, or a particular build in mind. You just dump out your bricks and build whatever is in your mind! It’s almost like a Zen experience for me!
What was your first LEGO experience?

Gift Certificates Coupons is a post from Chris Pirillo
It’s officially Christmas Eve! Time to start buying Gift Certificates for those hard to buy people on your list. Here’s a listing of dozen of online merchants that offer gift certificates, along with as many coupons as I could find. My personal favorite are the ones that offer email delivery on their gift certificates. That way you can still get them in time for Christmas.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
It’s officially Christmas Eve in some parts of the World right now, and only a few hours away here in Seattle!! Santa and I go wayyy back – all the way to my childhood. When I found out that the Jolly Elf himself was going to be live streaming this year, I had to get in on the action. After all, this is what I DO! So, I contacted Santa up at the Pole, and proposed an offer he couldn’t refuse. We hooked up via the Intertubez in order to tell all of you: “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night”
I have to thank my friend and long-time community member Databrokers for hooking Santa up with the stream this year. It’s thanks to Databrokers and his squirrels that Mr. Claus was able to show up online to talk with everyone. I’m told that he made the front page of Ustream earlier tonight, and pulled in just under 40,000 viewers for the night!
I meant what I said earlier in this post. From Pixie, Wicket and myself… Happy Christmas to all.

Santa Claus Email is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Santa sent me a video email! Can you believe it?! I didn’t know he did things like this! Oh, I hope I’m on the Nice list! I’ve tried so hard to be good this year. I only asked Santa for one thing. If I’m lucky, I’ll find it in my stocking on Christmas morning!
Wait, what? Santa says I haven’t been good enough? That is a load of hooey! I’ve been a model citizen this whole year! I’ve been good, I swear it! What’s the deal?! That list is rigged, I’m telling you. Someone is telling lies about me!
Are you on the naughty list – or the nice list? What do you think you’ll find in your stocking on Christmas?

MyBlogLog to Close Down in January is a post from Chris Pirillo
MyBlogLog is an interesting – and very popular – service, which boomed across the Internet a couple of years ago. Yahoo! bought it back in 2007 for a whopping ten million dollars. MyBlogLog is a service that shows blog writers and readers the faces and profile information of other MyBlogLog users that visit their sites. It grew like crazy after the acquisition by the Yahoo! team, and then… well… it fizzled flat.
In a move that isn’t really surprising anyone, Yahoo! is reportedly shutting the service down in just a few weeks. Yahoo! is not confirming this, stating that they are “looking at options” for MyBlogLog, and that “closing it down is only one option”.
Bloggers are going to be ticked. The general consensus seems to be that Yahoo! let this potentially powerful service languish, and is wasting what could have been an amazing tool for us all. The data amassed from this piece of Heaven could have proven very valuable to people like you and me – had Yahoo! chosen to develop and cultivate it at all.
MyBlogLog doesn’t just show you who visited you. It also offers access to activity streams from social networks that users had associated with their MyBlogLog accounts. For example, there was a bookmarklet built that would show the recent bookmarks on Delicious, pictures from Flickr, and items posted to LinkedIn accounts of your latest blog visitors. How insanely useful could that have been?!
It’s possible MyBlogLog may have been ahead of its time. Services like Twitter and Facebook are just now becoming a major source for connectivity and sharing. So, why is it that Yahoo! isn’t starting to work on further developing and promoting this service… instead of just closing the doors? It makes no sense to me at all.
OLPC to Bring a $75 Laptop to the Market is a post from Chris Pirillo
Skeptics are busy bashing the newest idea from the One Laptop Per Child folks. Their last offering was the XO, which was clunky and childish looking. It works well for younger children, I’m sure. However, for anyone older than grade-school age, this simply isn’t an option.
OLPC is spreading images – and words – about their newest innovation – the XO-3. It isn’t targeted for release until 2012, so we should not be too skeptic at this point. We have no idea if they will be able to pull off what it is they’re attempting to do this time around. The plans call for a notebook that is thinner than an iPhone, and uses touch interface. It is purported to have every traditional feature found in a computer, save the 8.5-by-11-inch screen. Instead of a mouse and keyboard, there will be a virtual (touch) keyboard that the child can use.
The idea being OLPC is a very good one. I purchased one of these myself during the original offering. You buy a laptop for a child you know, and another one is sent free via OLPC to a child in a developing country who would otherwise likely never see a computer.
So, what do you think? Is this something that they are going to be able to pull off? Will the $75-dollar laptop become a reality sooner than we think? If so… is it going to be something that everyday computer users would be able to make use of?
New Year’s Resolutions with a Twist is a post from Chris Pirillo
While you’re making your list of resolutions this year, why not add in some of a different nature? If you’ve been “meaning” to have more of a presence on the various social media networks, why not turn that into a resolution? Resolve to send out a particular number of thought-provoking tweets per day. Decide how often you will be able to update your various site profiles, and stick to it!
People want to know what you’re up to. I know, I know… you’re busy. I am, as well! But it’s critical these days to have an active presence on the various social media sites if you’re any kind of social Geek. You have to keep yourself – and your community – updated. Don’t just post about your dinner, either. People want to know what’s really going on in that head of yours!
Commit yourself to not only blogging yourself, but to reading what others have done. There are a lot of excellent findings right within our own community, if only you make the time to look!
Just in time for the holiday shopping crunch, our downloads team has assembled an excellent array of software and App offerings. Be sure to check out what’s available, and save money on software purchases!
Manage Your iPod Without iTunes is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
If you have an iPod, you know that using iTunes to sync it and manage your music can be a pain at times. Copy Trans Manager is a free alternative that is much easier to use. Marques is back with another screencast, and this time he’s going to show us all how to effectively manage our playlists and libraries with ease.
Copy Trans Manager can manage all of the music on your computer, not just that within your iPod or iPhone. Add music & videos to iPod, edit song tags and artworks, create and organize iPhone playlists, or preview tracks with the integrated music player. It has never been this simple!
It’s faster and lighter than iTunes… and it’s free. iTunes cannot effectively manage all of your media, though. Once you’ve downloaded Copy Trans Manager, simply install it. After installation, you’ll be taken to the Copy Trans Manager interface. Click to open the Copy Trans Manager itself.
First, the software will let you know it’s safe to connect your iPod. Go ahead and import all of your music, photos and even games into the program. Under “Advanced Settings”, there are numerous options you can choose in order to manage your music and files to your liking. Play around with them until you are satisfied with the way things are.
Copy Trans Manager is a very powerful piece of freeware, one that works amazingly well. It’s simple to use, and will do everything iTunes can do… and so much more!

Protect Your Computer for Christmas is a post from Chris Pirillo
Happy Holidays! If you are one of those generous Santas who is giving a computer this holiday season, please remember to protect it with some anti-virus and anti-spyware software. It seems that the hackers / criminals are going to vary and increase their attacks in the new year. It has been reported that file sharing networks will be under attack.
The tragic death of Brittany Murphy has meant fake sites spreading malware and faked emails leading to bogus sites. It is simply dangerous, and any new computer needs immediate protection.

Sick of Seeing Noise? Search Only Your Friends’ Tweets is a post from Chris Pirillo
You know how frustrating it is, right? You do a search on Twitter for something specific, and get a million results you don’t want to see. Heck, often the results may not even be necessarily what you’re looking for! There are times I want to do a search, and see what MY community has to say… not the entire world.
Enter Flocking Me, a new service that lets you perform Twitter searches, giving you only results from people you are following! Finally, I can find out what only the people I want to hear from are saying! It’s YOUR thoughts I want to hear. It’s YOUR ideas I want to share. Yes, sometimes it may be interesting to have a bajillion results when you’re looking for something. But for the most part, your group can give you the information you need much faster than if you had to sort through the masses.
Is this something you feel is going to help you in the long run when you’re looking for something? Being able to check out what’s going on in our community is vital to what I do, and services like this only make it that much easier for me!
