First, it sounds like you don't know much about computers. (Sorry to say that.)
You say you only bought the modem, keyboard and mouse.... Those are parts of a computer, not the computer itself.

Sounds like it could be a bad computer...Try opening it up see if you see anything obviously wrong in side of it.
