If your sound card is a creative you want to use the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture), I had the same problem. Oh and for the network I had that problem too, I fixed by using a USB network receiver.
I built One from scratch but forgot to put the heat sink on. Duh!!! :P I turned it on to install windows after i closed it so i had no idea, um... yah it ended badly.
I would say Ubuntu 8.04. It look very nice runs fast and uses gnome vs. KDE or X-Fice and i've had bad experience with both KDE and X-Fice but never with Gnome.
