Due to package updates, I am forced or requested to reboot my Linux systems as often as my Windows systems. Restarting services can be accomplished through the Services component under System Administration or Computer Management.

Yes, Dan, this is correct. But think about it. Why would I need to reboot my computer to install a date and time fix? I mean, seriously. And if rebooting isn't necessary, don't put in a little warning about it. I agree, a reboot shouldn't be r...

Actually MOST software does not require rebooting (at least from my experience), and when it does, simply logging off then back on is sufficient. Software that does require a reboot usually has system level components that need to be started with ...

Can We Not Install Software Without Rebooting?!

Here's a simple concept that would help Microsoft gain more consumer respect for Windows. Would it not be nice to be able to reboot certain components of the operating system without restarting Windows itself in effort to help eliminate the need to reboot after an installation? I think it would be nice to somehow allow a "rehash" of certain services, dlls, and system components from the task manager. Do you agree? Comment with your thoughts please.

Windows 7 - I'm Not Impressed

Ah, the next Microsoft Windows operating system is finally getting ready to be released. This wonderful occasion only happens about once every 3 to 5 years. However this time, for me, it is different.

Between the last Microsoft Windows release, Windows Vista, and present time I have reconsidered my love for Microsoft Windows. After becoming more of a “Geek” I started to slowly realize there were other operating systems out there that were as modern and functional as Microsoft Windows. I also re… Continue

Wikipedia

Imagine this: Your working on a research paper and you cant find the name of Abraham Lincoln's sister. (Scary, right?) So, as any modern-day person would do, you Google it. Oh look.. the first result goes to Wikipedia. Now you need to know who invented the internet. Once again, one goes to Google it and the first result is Wikipedia. Why is this? Was there a special deal made between Wikipedia and Google? The answer: No.

Wikipedia simply has so much information it has consumed a definable porti… Continue

Pidgin

No matter what protocol, no matter what client, we all use some type of instant messaging. Some use services like AIM and MSN (Windows Live) while others use protocol like XMPP or IRC. What if I told you that there is a client that supports all of these protocols and more? What if I told you that there was a client that supportat multiple accounts, plugins, customization, and much more? Well, I most certainly wouldn't be crazy, because it exists!

Pidgin Instant messenger, available at… Continue

Twickie

Over the past couple of days Chris Pirillo, fellow geek, blogger, ustreamer, technologist, and inspiration, has been working on a new project. Over the weekend he finally introduced this project as Twickie. Twickie apparently allows you to have a centralized and more organized point to view your @ replies. Now I don't get a lot of @ replies at all on Twitter so I haven't been able to test this tool extensively. There are also some nice features that let you copy/paste the @ replies to a conversa… Continue

Where are you in Mich? We have a home in Shelby Township and split our time between there and the home here in Toronto. I would be interested in talking to you about your IRC server as we currently have a chat room looking for a new home.
