Great source of information....Xbox 360 ONLY may use fat32....you did not specify what format the HD was in but if given the same issue I would make sure it was Fat32 before going any farther.
yes ubunto appears to work on an Xbox...If I was even trying anything like this for ease of use I would just let the exisiting HD inside the Xbox attach the external to a PC and stream whatever is needed off of the hard drive connected to the PC.
