Hopefully for starters, you are using WicketPixie 1.2, which is available for download at http://www.ohloh.net/p/wicketpixie/download. Right now, you can't add a widget to the homepage sidebar using WordPress' widget editor. Instead, you modify the home page through the WicketPixie Home Editor in the WordPress Admin. You could always rename home.php to something else, and then WordPress will use index.php for the home page. Then dynamic widgets (configurable through the Widget Editor) will be enabled.

The home page is a special page, that is why, by default, dynamic widgets aren't enabled. We have plans for the home page, like incorporating your activity stream and making WicketPixie more of a Social Media theme.
