Gore-Tex "Bivy-Sack" (an extremely small, lightweight, waterproof shelter)
What do you use as a shelter?
Sleeping on a kayak camping trip it's best to keep gear down as much as possible and to use items that are more versatile, I use a Bivy-Sack so I am going to tell you about one of my favorite camping assessories.
Wikipidia:
A bivouac sack (also known as a bivy sack, bivvy bag, bivi bag or just bivy) is an extremely small, lightweight, waterproof shelter, and an alternative to traditional tent systems. It is used by climbers, mountaineers, hikers, ultralight backpackers, soldiers and minimalist campers. The bivouac sack has a larger, similar counterpart, called a bivouac shelter.

My Bivy-Sack: It has a Gore-Tex top and waterproof Nylon bottom. I use it on top of my camp cot. This way I can place my bed over sharp rocks or even a small stream if I have to. The mosquito net I use a bungee cord to keep it away from my face. It's on a hook to make for quick disconnect in the event of a downpour and I have to zip the bivy up tight. Because the bivy is made of Gore-Tex on the top it allows the moisture (sweat) to pass through the top but at the same time not allow rain to get in. I used it in the rain forest on Vancouver Island's West Coast Trail and was the driest camper in our group. The only time I got wet was momentarily while exiting the bivy in the morning while it was still raining. Quite amazing and at one pound the bivy is handy for any camping trip, even in a snow cave as I have used it on winter camping trips. Another great thing about Gore-Tex is it blocks the wind incredibly well. This makes my 3 season sleeping bag great for cold weather. In the summer I spend most of my nights on top of my sleeping bag while in the bivy even if there is a wind I am well sheltered.
Have a great day!
