What processor did you use before your Quad Core? And when you upgraded did you notice a difference?

I came from dual core 1.8, and the difference is amazing!

I had a Pentium 4 @ 3.6 GHz, single core with HT function before my quad core.
I upgraded the computer with a Q6600 2.4 GHz and it was a major difference.
I also have 8 GB of RAM so my virtual PC´s runs really smooth.

My most powerful CPU before my current Q6600-based system was an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Palomino. I'm not kidding-I stuck it out with that thing for around five years until I could wait no more (mostly because I wasn't in the position to get a new PC). Needless to say, the jump was astounding-things that chugged on the old machine (usually something as simple as a Web page loaded with Flash!) just flew on the new one, not to mention that whenever one program decided to hoard CPU cycles like nobody's business, the whole system didn't grind to a halt. (Vista's dependence on the hard drive does bog things down a bit, though-hopefully, it'll go away when my 8 GB of DDR2 arrives.)

It wasn't my first SMP experience, though, as I got an Abit BP6 loaded with a couple of Celeron Mendocino 533s, Thermaltake Golden Orbs on each, and 768 MB of PC-133 SDRAM for classic computing purposes (because old games don't like new computers for the most part) a good while before I got my current build. Too bad that no games from that era aside from Quake III can harness both CPUs, and those that can are too demanding for the overall system (because they're built with modern multi-core CPUs in mind, not a couple of old Celerons).

My main system is a 2.40GHz Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 with 4GB Ram DDR2 PC2-6400 (400 MHz), and this configuration blows all of three other workstations out of the water. I am doing some serious multitasking and it remains as smooth as silk. And the gaming on this system is by far the best experience. Quad core experience is just phenomenal. Some people swear by Dual core for gaming, but I will always pick a Quad core any day of the week - because my needs are much more that just gaming.

These are my three other workstations still maintained and in use today.
2.60 GHZ AMD Dual Core FX60, with 3GB of RAM
Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.6GHz, single core, with 1GB of RAM
Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.0GHz, single core, with 1GB of RAM

Last machine before converting to quad core was one of the X6800 Conroe's. Even stock at 2.93ghz, it was blazing fast, much faster than my 3.6ghz P4 w/HT. I will say the quad core can handle a lot more abuse without stuttering, but I will have to agree, solo gaming is best left (or was) to the high speed dual cores, mostly because the Quads couldn't keep up in raw clockspeed. Now that the quads are climbing higher and higher into the Ghz and i7 is more efficient, I think it will be the other way around.

As a primary, the good old AMD Athlon 64 hyperthreaded, but can't remember the ghz. 1gb of ram though :( - used it for 5 years!! happy with it for well over 3 to 4 years.
Now I'm using the q6600 at 2.4 GHz as well! 4gb of ram.

wow. i bet that you were surprized from the speed difference. Going from 1GB of RAM to 4GB of Ram, and going from 1 core to 4 cores. It's brave of you sir.

The ol' machine is a Celeron @ 2.99GHz. Multitasking on the new box with a Q6700 is so slick, I finally converted the pile of parts into a Q9550 powerhouse. Even used a Q6600 in a Shuttle barebone for the living room HTPC. (2008 was a good year)

Before a quad core AMD Phenom 9950 @ 2.6ghz I had an Intel Pentium 4 at 2.5ghz. I saw a hell of a difference when it came to performance, mind you it could be the fact that it was a completely new computer.

Well let's see. It was something that I think was made by some homeless person who was digging around in a junkyard one day. It was a piece of crap. Let's just say that. I was, and still am not proud of it. Let's just stop there.

I was using a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz single core with HT and 2 Gb of ram. Still have it in my secondary computer, and truth be told I still love the thing. LOL.
