What apps have you seen a REAL performance boost with quad core vs. single or dual core? I know an increase in overall multitasking is there, but is there a single app that really uses ALL of the cores? If so, what was yours?

i have seen an increase in fps in games like crysis ,unreal tournament 3 and nfs undercover ,the applications like video converting and un zipping or un raring becomes almost four times as fast as on a p4 ,also you can do heavy multi tasking together like scanning ur pc with an antivirus ,wriing a dvd and playing a heavy game like crysis
I don't use any really demanding applications, i.e. video editing, database sorting, games, what have u. Consequently, the quad core equipped machines here don't look or feel any better than my old single core CPU.
OTOH, running a scad of processes with giddy abandon is duck soup to the quad. Tube filling downloads and massive internal file movements while playing music, watching video and reading web stuff simultaneously seems to make no difference to this machine.
I haven't found anything I use able to bog down the processor.
As with most other people, I think you really notice the difference in Quad Core v. Single Core when you play system intensive multi-threaded games. Games such as GTA IV and newer Source Engine games run so much better.
Everything runs so much faster, but I haven't really focused on doing performance test for individual apps. I can tell you that Adobe Photoshop CS4 renders effects much faster than it ever did.
Sony Vegas Pro 8 also runs much smoother and faster.
Maya makes use of all cores on mine, as does portal server, but those aren't exactly run of the mill. Very few consumer applications actually currently use a great degree of parallelism. Crysis, for instance, is coded to use a two core affinity. This will change with the advent of products like Intel Parallel Studio, so you're making a good investment if you're purchasing intel right now.
