Hi everyone, I'm new to this group and I'm an aspiring writer. I've recently graduated high school and I've come across a University that has this bachelors degree for creative writing. However, I'm living in the most expensive province of Canada and tuition here is sky high. Is this a good idea to get a degree, even with the whole "you can't learn to be a artist" deal, as I've been told by friends and family. I just thought it would be a good idea to learn everything I can.
Learn everything you can. There are always going to be people on both sides of the "creativity can't be learned" thing, but I look at it a different way. Sometimes taking a formal training type of class can give you a different perspective on something and open up a part of your creativity that you hadn't been able to tap into before. If you are really inspired to be a writer, the only person that you should be listening to is yourself. Coming from an English major, there are always going to be folks that are going to tell "you can't get a job" with that.
If you aren't happy with what you're doing, what does it matter what other people think. Right? (:
Wow, thank you so much! You don't understand how happy I feel just from hearing that coming from someone with an English major! Also, you are absolutely right, I really need to start thinking for myself for now on. :)
