My DH and I have jobs where we work out of the home using the internet. My DH is an avid hunter and has heard stories that the deer population in Wisconsin is much higher than anywhere in NE. Any one who has information about how good hunting is (and I don't want to start a flame war about the pros and cons of hunting - we eat what he catches), I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm leaning towards NH because of the tax breaks (no income tax and no sales tax). I have a cousin who lives in Berlin, NH which has lost its major employer. The problem is that although the housing may be cheaper there, would we lose money if we bought a home there?

Is there a good location with broadband internet that the housing market is stable? We cannot afford a mortgage that would put us over $100,000 with today's economy. We do have to buy a house because our mortgage has clause in it that if we pay off the mortgage early and don't get another mortgage with the company we will have to pay a fee. We might be able to afford a property that is around $200,000 if it has a duplex, two houses on it, or a house with a decent sized in-law apartment because my Father is also looking to buy a house.

If we can sell our current house at a reasonable amount (i.e. a profit), we may even be able to buy land in the country-side for my DH to go hunting on.

I had a customer located in South Barre, Vermont. It was a beautiful area and had an up & coming business district. The customer himself had moved there from Brooklyn because of the price of Real Estate. I went up there to set up their Computer Network.

My family lived in NH for many years. I really loved the area... the woods, etc.

We lived in Salisbury, NH, and my Dad worked in Concord, the state capitol.

The thing that struck me about NH is the same thing that strikes me about Maine.

Yes, the states are nice and quiet, in some ways. Lots of great Mother Nature, lots of space.

But that has a bad side effect. There may not be many jobs, especially in certain areas (further from the larger cities, etc.)

I left NH before "there was an Internet." My ex-wife told me that Salisbury does have the Internet.. not sure if they have broadband.

The further you live from the larger cities, the less you have. (Examples, Cable TV, choices of Internet connections, etc.)

I have to say these are pretty rough times. So many companies are having financial troubles. So many people are having troubles with their own finances. There have been a record number of foreclosures, etc.

I think it might be very risky to try selling a house, moving and buying another.

My Dad recently moved from Miami FL to Atlanta GA. He said he was fortunate that he sold the old house just before the Real Estate Bubble burst. My Dad is good with his money. He never gets a mortgage to buy a house. He just pays "cash."

This might be a good time to just stay where you are, and see if the Economy improves.

DH - Darling Hubby

I'm an independent contractor so my job is anywhere there is broadband internet. DH's job is slightly dependent on the market, but it is in healthcare so that would have to take a big dive for him to be laid off. And he has chosen to work off-shift so replacing him is a little bit more difficult.

As long as the town has cable, DH's job may get them to offer cable internet. That's what happened in our current town. I had been watching for broadband (cable or DSL) to arrive to our town. At 5PM on a Friday evening cable internet was not available. My DH was in contact with the cable company because he absolutely needed it for his job. At 8PM it was available.

We live in an area that the housing market isn't as affected by the Real Estate Bubble burst. The only thing that would be a problem is the same reason we're looking for housing in a more depressed area - the houses are not selling in general because of layoffs.
