Both were instrumental in the birth of the 'PC.'

Check out the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley.' Great docudrama of the birth of the whole PC industry.

Also I should mention that their technical savy is less important than their technical vision of where the industry will go. So that is generally the maner in which the two get compared.

Sorry to reply to such an old post, but I just need to say how right you are. I would also love to recommend Pirates of Silicon Valley to anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in computers, and I imagine that everyone here at Geeks! is.

I really wish they wouldn't get compared. Their approach to the PC market is waaay different.

Bill Gates/Microsoft creates software that can run on any PC no matter what hardware you have and is focused on compatability for all users whether they are using the latest hardware or something 10 years old, trust me on that, I've got both. When they went into the Videogame sector they were prepared, much unlike Apple and its failed console from the mid 90's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin
Gates is still living in this world, he dresses in this worlds clothes and speaks with this worlds language. Jobs is in his own world wearing some strange things and everything is "i" this and "i" that.

Steve Jobs/Apple is more along the lines of one computer model for everyone, one OS that is a pain in the arse when it comes to backward compatability, and upgrading pretty much means getting a new computer. He and his company majorly overprice their hardware, ever price a PowerMac with max specs? You're talking over $16,000. They rarely use any universal ports, other than USB/Firewire and a Headphone Jack, so adaptors for EVERYTHING ELSE! This is also the guy that thought the Netbook wouldn't catch on...WRONG. That's one reason why Apple doen't have one. Another reason is probably the price factor, there's no way it would be between $300 and $500. Steve jobs also has some diehard fans that will buy anything with an Apple logo it, it's pretty sad. I bet there are thousands upon thousands of Apple users out there that haven't gone to Blu-Ray only because they are waiting for an Apple to come with a drive built in. Any PC user out there can add one in with little difficulty if their current rig is up to spec.

I agree with you one Apple being overpriced, and with the fact that there is very little variety. I can't comment on backward compatability, because I haven't used Macs enough to be able to tell, so as far as I know you may or may not be right.
I would have to say I can't see what you're talking about with the ports. I thought they used mostly the normal ports, and besides, USB/Firewire and the Headphone/speaker jacks are mostly all you need. I thought that they used the normal VGA or DVI ports for monitors (I don't know which... but I imagine it would be one of those, not both), and there aren't any other ports that you would need, that I can think of.
The main reason a actually wanted to make a reply here is to point out that Microsoft made a much bigger error with regards to thinking something wouldn't catch on. They made the mistake of believing that the internet was just a fad. They have, of course, since made up for that, but at first it was a large mistake.

Bill Gates is a true Geek, pure function for consumers and business alike with great standardization. Steve Jobs is an elitist money grubbing pig making huge dough off Chinese slave labor. There you have it.
