I know what you are saying. People still think of apple as they were in the 80's... well...die-hard PC people that is. They have come a long way. People think I am crazy to spend the amount of money I did on a 5 year old machine. What they don't realize is this machine still holds its own against some of the latest PC's.

@Kirk
Sounds like you have a good handle on this. good luck with your "tinkering". It's a blast when my PC friends visit and after telling that a Mac can't be Modded they see HAL. their jaws drop, eyes as big as saucers. AND he speaks too.

Thanks for the info! I actually sold the unit on ebay and picked up another G5. This one has a dual core 2.0ghz processor. It has 2gigs of ram right now. It can go up to 16gigs. It has the "newer" pci-express slots and 1gig FSB. Its much quicker than the single core 1.6. I am very happy. I plan on increasing the ram to 8 gigs and installing the latest superdrive. It seems to handle about anything I can throw at it, so far... Eventually I am going to upgrade the video card to the GeForce 7800 GT.

@Kirk Grames.
ALL the RAM you can cram into it. Like engine displacement. There's NO replacement for Displacement. The more RAM the quicker your Apps will be able to access the info needed to run fast. I also like to add as many Hard Drives as it can hold.
I'm running my PowerMac G4 at Max Ram (1.5 GB) and 7 Hard drives (640 GB). Salvaged TiVo or DVR HDD's can be formatted just fine. Dunno if your G5 used IDE or SATA drive system, but you can add PCI cards to drive more HDDs of both types.
I think I have pix of my G4 Mod (HAL) on my profile page. I went full bore. Processor, Video, Ram, USB, HDD's, Case Mods. What I did is NOT for the squeemish. It meant cutting and splicing into the wiring harness, soldering tiny stuff, cutting holes in the case and frame, glueing stuff. changing over switch operations and indicator lighting.

Anyone know how to do a full desktop screen-cast / Screen recording that captures full desktop image including the Dock, and also captures the iSight webcam image, and audio. Just like the ones used for "how to" videos. Anyone know?

I just purchased a PowerMac G5 1.6ghz system for cheap. It came with 1gb of ram. I am not a gamer but consider myself a power-user. Other than the memory it is stock. I am going to install Leopard on it. What hardware upgrades do you guys recommend? Specifics? Thanks!
