Download Our Windows 7 Tips!

This is just a for fun discussion, so let's not rip each other's heads off... unless you wanna take it to UT3, in which case you will die a horrible fragging death MUWAHAHAHA!

*ahem* k, enough of that...

So, long long ago, once upon a time, I had, and loved to pieces, my Voodoo3 3000 by 3dfx video card.
Then it died. /tear

I discovered through a lot of trial and error that Nvidia's GeForce series cooperated with me as well as my beloved Voodoos did, and that ATI cards rather hated my guts on multiple levels and did their damndest to make my life hell and my computer miserable.

Reversely, a good friend of mine has the exact same problem from the opposite end of the spectrum - GeForce cards hate him profusely. They have fried no less than 3 of his MBs and he hates them right back as hard as he can.
But ATIs... oh the ATIs... how they love him, obey him, listen to him, and work for him! Nothing but the most outstanding performance has been his experience with ATI cards.

As a result, we banter quite playfully about how our cards are better than the other (e.g. "You know why GeForce hates you? Cuz you're a communist!")

So, what are your preferences?
Do you like one brand over another and why for (specs aside)?
Tell us about some of your stranger experiences with different cards!

... and sometime later, I might divulge the evil secrets of the horrid, annoying CD-Rom gremlins we had to deal with later.

Ok, your turn.

Id have to say, still nVidia. i started out a nvidia fan (between the two) and have stayed loyal for quite some time.
But there's a problem... AMD's merger/aquisition with ATI... im also a die hard AMD fan... And ati's driver support in linux is building quickly, almost surpassing that of nvidia (one of the many reasons i love nvidia)

so for now, nvidia, but expect that to change within the year

I have to say Geforce is my fave... But I wonder if he was trying to use a card that was not compatible with his motherboard?

I have to to say ATI all the way, especially becuase i just put a HD4850 in my new computer, and ill have to get U3 so i can totaly own you :)

Whatever ones compatible with my mobo at the time i'm building my comp. Right now i'm running a AMD crossfire ready mobo...with a nVidia card...it sucks.

I am going to have to agree with kitten on this one. I actually currently have 2 machines which treat nvidia and ATI about the same, so it just comes down to what I want to do. I don't run a lot though these, mostly World of Warcrack.

i've always used ATI and they've always loved me in return. but this past summer i got a new acer laptop with a geforce 8400m gs ... and it has had the most random errors! it's crashed my machine at least 3 times out of nowhere. i'd just be browsing the web and all of a sudden my screen goes garbled and purple. although a few times i just waited about 15 seconds and it fixed itself.
and then today, it spontaneously forgot how my dual-monitor setup was set up -- it switched the two screens on me.
so, so far I like ATI. <3

I guess I'm becoming a bit of an ATI fan myself... it's strange really, I bought one at walmart and it seemed not to give me any problems, then I got an Nvidia card in my new computer and it keeps switching the video outs for my dual monitor... and even though the specs are higher for it than any card I've owned previously it seems to perform worse... this is my first PCI-E card though, perhaps it's the board...

mine seems to consistently switch video outs if i close & reopen my laptop lid. this is aggravating.

I've always been an nVidia guy and always will. I used an ATI once to try it out but I didn't like it too much. Right now I'm using the Intel i7 cpu with an Evga geforce gtx 260. It runs so flawlessly. AMD is nice, but I'm a huge multitasker and gamer so for me, Intel is where it's at.

I believe that there will not only be video card wars but as we have already seen there will be a never ending battle between different brands and technologies. I for one believe that nVidia is the better choice over ATI. My reason for this is because, nVidia has the more reliable and user friendly interface.
