I'm not one for social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook. I do have an account on both but rarely do I ever go to them. What makes Geeks.Pirillo.Com different? I can't stop exploring this site. What is the difference between this and other networks? Other sites allow you to upload pictures, post blogs and most other things this site offers, but for some reason, this one has more draw. Maybe it's because it is new, or because it is aimed at people with my interests, or maybe simply because it has the name Chris Pirillo attached to it.

Personally, I think Chris may have stumbled across a new standard for social networking. This is more than just a place to hang around, tweak your profile and see how many "friends" you can accumulate. It is a place with strong content from professionals and laymen persons alike, each with their own valid opinions and statements. Each day I find content that interests me and motivates me to write comments or posts with my opinions and thoughts.

What is your opinion? Is this site in competition with the other networking giants or does it stand on its own, and why? Are you here until the "newness" wears off and then will move on to the next thing? Is it just a fad that will pass in a few months or is this the social networking of the future?

Leave me a comment and let me know!

Geeks has energy. I can feel a pulse on geeks.pirillo that I don't feel on other social networking sites. Being able to personalize your own page adds to the sense of dynamism and personalization. The fact that the pages are not set up in linear fashion, but offer ad hoc design approaches, also gives it energy. I"m disappointed in the groups so far. Some people seem to be setting them up with no real desire to keep the flow going. This could cause problems over time and stagnate the geeks energy. Fluidity and flow will keep interest high. Stagnation will kill it.

I agree about the groups thing. It is a pet peeve of mine. There are way to many duplicate groups or "dumb groups". Instead of 5 groups about sub products just have one main one with the discussions be the subs.

Chris' rules on "Create A Groups" page says:
If your Group does not have any new content within a day of inception, it's getting deleted - no questions asked. If your Group does not sustain at least a few new pieces of content every week, it's on probation. It is YOUR responsibility as Group owner / administrator to keep it going - not necessarily the members of that Group. They joined because they're interested, but you have to step up to the plate and serve them as much as you expect them to serve the group.

As a Geeks Admin, I'll see what I can do about the dead groups.
What would you consider "dead".
No posts or comments in 15 days?
Less then 5 members after a month?

I just dropped from a few groups myself, for exactly this reason. No one posts. I guess 30 days, and maybe 5-10 or less would make sense to be considered dead.

for me i think the main attraction i have and the reason why i use geeks is that i chose to use it rather than the peer pressure to get a myspace or facebook account.
i also feel that the site is less cluttered and more socially oriented than other social networks. what does pokeing someone really mean anyway?

here i get comments and feedback on what i put out there rather than just a smiley face or a lol.

Maybe it's just me. I don't see Geeks in the same light or function that I see MySpace or the other social networking sites.

I saw Chris' videos on YouTube, and thought he looked very interesting. I figured his site would offer some good stuff.

I've had many "connections" here on Geeks... I had quite a few at YouTube before.

I'm trying to get off my lazy duff, and go out into the Real World to look for Social Contacts.

In the meantime, Geeks is a fun place to visit.

I pretty much avoid most of the Social network sites.

Since coming to Geeks, I very seldom ever visit my other social sites. This place is filled in good information that I can put to work for me on my computer. Many people offer good insite into what app, camera, or many other items that I might be shopping for, and I find this very helpful, since they own it or use it.

Also, with the discussion front and center for everyone to see on the main page, I feel that keeps the forums going. It isn't like one site where I have a group where I had to make a point to go there to find out what is going on.

We can see people as they join which is another attraction. Plus, the way it is set up is great for people to really get to know each other. That makes for a very friendly community.
