Your Thoughts on Political Correctness.

With all of the views and opinions out there, a lot of people can be offended by a lot of different things. Even small things like Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays. Merry Christmas refers to the birth of Jesus. Happy Holidays is more generic and applies to a multitude of winter holidays. Do you guys think we need to go politically correct and have people just live with the fact that people have conflicting beliefs and ideas.

Obviously, the way I worded this, I am against political correctness. There's always going to be a group of people that are against something that someone else believes. Heck, the fact that there are people against political correctness means it doesn't work. I think it's a pointless and impossible fight.

I think we would be better off just aiming for decent manners and a little civility, some people will always be offended by things, but if we can all just be civil, I think a lot of the problems would be eliminated.

As for the Christmas vs. Holiday thing; I've become a lot more conscious of it since the whole "War on Christmas" things became popular a couple of years ago. It seems like a lot of people who say "Merry Christmas" now are doing it as if they are daring you to object.

I've also notice that some places have gone completely the other way from the "holiday" thing, in that they only do Christmas now. I tried to find a Chanukah card at my local Wal-Mart (yes, I know I shouldn't shop there), and they had nothing. Not so much as a plastic dreidel in their gigantic "Christmas Store", let alone a greeting card.

Permalink Reply by Bits Byte on December 23, 2008 at 7:00pm: Political correctness is just the government trying to say we care about all of you and we don't want your feelings getting hurt, vote for us all again. I don't mind saying Happy Holidays because, well when I approach someone I don't know exactly what they celebrate so I'd rather not clump them into a religion they don't follow. I'm not saying I'm all considerate and stuff, I just know if someone just walked up to me and said "Happy Chanukah", I'd tell them I don't follow that holiday and make the whole thing awkward.

The holidays are a time for peace, not bitter argument like what to say, I'm all for "Happy Holidays" simply because it symbolizes undivided brotherhood/sisterhood in the world which I feel is what this time of year really needs to be about.

A Christian wishing me a merry Christmas doesn't offend me at all -- on the contrary, I appreciate it as a heartfelt sentiment of good will. My wishing someone a series of "happy holidays" shouldn't be considered offensive, either!

I've always preferred the festive spirit of New Year's Eve (even when I didn't drink) to the Sunday-ish, "everything's closed and there's nothing to do" feeling of Christmas. I've always loved being out and about, wishing everyone I pass a "happy new year!" Feels like a much more hopeful holiday.

And those of us who have grown up to celebrate Christmas inevitably feel guilty if times are tough and we can't give as much as we'd like. New Year's Eve, on the other hand, only asks that we reflect on the previous year and hope for better in the one that's coming. It's a time of fresh beginnings and optimistic recognition of our potential (at least I've always seen it that way).
