I'm considering buying a brand new laptop, top of the range, with all the specs of a desktop.

Then I'm going to transfer all of my files from my current desktop to the new laptop.

So then I'll have portability, and if I want, I can just stick in the VGA cable from my current monitor/TV and use my laptop on a 32" screen.

And I could also plug in a keyboard and a mouse if I felt like it too, so it would be exactly the same as a desktop, except with portability. [However much you can get from a top-of-the-range laptop].

Are there any problems in this idea?

Thanks a lot!
I thought of this idea today and I thought to myself, why doesn't everybody do it? There must be a reason...

Oh yeah, and what Brand of laptop do you use?

Like me, you don't play Computer Games anymore either, but I still want the performance.

That's what I was contemplating until recently when I found out that Dell XPSs only come in 15.4" [I much prefer 17"] and the Dell XPS Gaming laptops come in 17" but the battery is utterly useless.
So I think I'll have to get a Studio.
What's the HP's battery life like?

Well, personally I think it would be good to have it anyway.
Just in case I needed it on the road.
I think I'm just going to buy the best battery on the market for it anyway.
I wonder how much of a difference there is between the 15.4" battery life and the 17"'s?

Thats exactly what I do now. Unless your making a movie or running a program with high level computations I don't see why a laptop can't replace a desktop. I see no problems with that plan.

Well right now I have a desktop a couple of years old, I think it has only 2GB RAM and 160GB memory, it's been perfect for everything I've needed it for.
And I've ran some pretty high-performance stuff.

And my household just got a new generic-use laptop and it has 3GB RAM and like 320GB memory.

So I'm planning to get myself a new 4GB RAM laptop and 6 hundred and something memory on it.

It also has a video card far better than the one I have now, and the one I have now has done me for all my hardcore gaming, although I don't game anymore.

All of my computers are Dell and I think I'm going to go with a new Dell laptop as well.

What brand do you use?

The only reason you should get a laptop is for the internet and maybe a little music.

Why not use it as I use a desktop?

I see no reason.

Unless you travel EVERYWHERE with your laptop and have to do everything on the fly and shit like that. Then fine get a laptop as your main.

Now if you just need your laptop for this and that. And like to sit in front of the fire on the internet on a rainy day, then theres no reason to even get a laptop you're describing.

In all my experiences with laptops (and other peoples experiences) I've never come across anyone that was happy with there choice 4+ months down the rode. There laptop got extremely slow and over crowded, or the battery wentout it wont charge, they hate there screen cause it's to big/small. the hinges are all fucked up. There's just so many things.

You know what get a laptop go ahead i dont care. But dont come crying to me when shit goes down.

Slow and overcrowded?

I have tens of thousands of songs, thousands of pictures, and hundreds of movies on my desktop now and it has just 2GB RAM. And there's not a thing wrong with it.
And the laptop I'm looking at has 4GB RAM, so I doubt there'd be any problem there.

Battery won't charge? I'd get it fixed by the manufacturer for free. Although I don't see it likely.

Screen not the right size? I'm getting a 17" and right now that's what I have on my current laptop and that's perfect, and as I said, I'm going to be using it off my 32" HDTV whenever I want.
So there's no problem there.

And hinges fucked up? Not likely. But even if it did, I'd get it fixed by the manufacturer for free as well.

Yeah the only people who really ought to have desktops these days are gamers or graphic designers and we wish our boxes were portable!

Yeah but I was a huge gaming addict at the beginning of this year and all of last year and I used a desktop with specs less than an average laptop has now.

And I also used to do a lot of graphic design, flash design, etc. With the best graphic tools on the market, so I don't think there's any reason to have a desktop, no matter who you are.
