Hello
I have a custom build PC running Windows XP Pro. I have a new 8GB SDHC card and an internal card reader. Apparently Windows will not read SD cards larger then 4GB with out the hot fix here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428/en-us. Unfortunately when I go to Microsoft's website to get the hot fix it tells me that my Windows did not pass genuine advantage (or something like that). How can I get this hot fix? any help would be appreciated.

Here you go. You may want to think about installing a "Legal Version" of XP on your machine. The only reason, that I can think of, that it would fail the Genuine Advantage test would be because you have a "Bootleg" version of XP installed on your machine or you have only one license and this is the second installation of XP that you have this particular licensed version installed onto. Or it also could be that you never "Activated" XP.
That is not a stupid question. I don't know how to check the compatibility but based on it's age I assume it dose not support SDHC. I was very upset when I found out that my SD reader would not read SD cards *arrrg*. I was hoping that a hotfix or firmware update or something would make it compatible. I can buy a new internal reader for $20 and install it myself but that seems ridiculous. Is there a way to make my reader compatible? I bought the stuff for this computer and built it myself about 2 years ago. I had never used the card reader but it was there if I needed it (I tested and it reads a 2GB). I can trust that my floppy drive will always and forever read floppys but why on the one day I actually need the card reader it is no longer compatible. This sucks.
From what I know, it's a hardware issue. The tiny brain embedded on the SD card reader just can't handle an SDHC media. To the best of my knowledge, no driver, patch, or hotfix is going to change that. If I were you though, I would buy a USB external card reader instead of an internal reader. I have built few computers for personal use, and the two computers which have internal card readers at times hang or restart when I insert any media in their readers. I'm sure others will have different opinions, but I always found the USB external card readers to be far more stable.
It´s the cardreader that can´t handle SDHC.
I had an old reader that couldn´t read those cards.
I was lucky to get a small SDHC reader for free when I bought a 4 GB SDHC card for my camera.
I can connect the camera directly to the computer as well.
I'm running Win XP SP3 32bit and my card reader reads 8gb SDHC cards just fine. I've tried both the micro and the regular sized 8gb cards, I have no problems reading. I think Roberto mixed up the fact that XP supports upto 4GB of RAM ( less if you add graphics cards as they use that quota too), it's the same with Vista 32bit as well. Those limitations on memory support have nothing to do with reading SDHC card from say a USB card reader.
So it seems that if I want the convenience of sliding a memory drive directly into the PC I need a new internal card reader. I can use the usb dongle from my camera but I hate wires. I miss 3.5" floppys, of corse they don't come close to the capacity needed these days but it was a universal storage medium. Formating was quick and easy, files would copy immediately via drag and drop, non of this CD-RW Burn at 2x crap. Even my digital camera took 3.5" floppys. Now it's CD ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, CD+R, CD+RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, SD, SDHC, Compact Flash, USB Flash, Sony Memory Stick, Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo, XD. DAMN IT! Pick a damn format and stick with it. PLEASE!
