Media Player Classic for M$ Windows, it's clean, small, and will load any codec under the sun, came packaged in Ace Mega Codecs. Nearly never had any issues with it. All of my friends swear by VLC, but I've had no issues with Totem in Ubuntu, also light and to the point.

i dont really care for windows media player i like gom because if u get a movie thats out of sync you can still watch it . and when you watch a movie in full screen you dont see the black bars on the top and bottom of the movie.
The window Media player Daniel is referring to are not the same then the one you mentioned. Media Player Classic is almost identical to an older Media Player when Media Player was bloated with junk yet added extras into it.
My favorite player is called The Core Media Player which I found had some neat features when you use it with .mvk video files.
I personally like VLC because it's the only player that can play video that is in the middle of being downloaded. I don't really have a favorite, whatever works, but usually vlc will play most files.
